๐ŸŽถ Today's Golden Oldies were a bit of a mixed bag... ๐ŸŽถ

Michael started the day at Polventon House in St Keverne for this morning's session.

Things got off to a slightly unusual start when Michael set up in a different position to normal. Looking back, this probably put him out of sight of a few residents โ€“ entirely his own doing!

The staff had also forgotten Michael was coming today, but thankfully the Golden Oldies set-up is small and compact, so it was no problem at all. Everything was soon ready and the music got underway.

Michael mixed things up a little with some lesser-played songs and was asked to perform "The Floral Dance", famously associated with the Brighouse and Rastrick Band and later made hugely popular with Terry Wogan's version.

One particular moment towards the end of the morning really made Michael's day. One lady, using her frame, danced her way from room to room as she went. โค๏ธ

The nurse who was carrying out residents' foot care was also happily singing along while she worked, and there were some lovely comments about Michael's rather colourful choice of attire! ๐Ÿ˜‚

After a quick trip to Rosenithon to see Mum and Dad, it was back on the road for the afternoon session.

This time it was another Anson Care Services Ltd โ€“ Crossroads House.

And this one was... interesting.

While setting up, Michael was met by one resident who, to put it mildly, isn't his biggest fan! ๐Ÿ˜‚

His weight was questioned, his sexuality was questioned and he was eventually told he looked "f***ing ridiculous" in his waistcoat.

Michael understands that dementia and other illnesses can sometimes affect the way people behave and what they say. He absolutely doesn't want to judge someone for something that may be completely outside their control.

But if he's being completely honest, it's still difficult not to take personal comments personally, especially when they're directed straight at you.

After a few more barbed comments once the music had started, Michael quietly suggested to a member of staff that perhaps the lady might prefer not to stay for the session.

She chose to stay.

And eventually, she fell asleep. ๐Ÿ˜‚

On the other side of the room, though, things were rather different.

More residents gradually came into the lounge as the session went on, including one lady who recognised Michael and was clearly very happy to see him again.

Then a newer resident joined the group, and the sheer delight on her face was infectious. It became even more special when her daughter and granddaughters arrived to visit her.

Watching that interaction was genuinely lovely.

And perhaps that's what today demonstrated better than anything.

Golden Oldies isn't always about everyone loving every song or every performance.

Some days are quieter. Some people don't want to join in. Some don't recognise Michael. Some might not even want him there.

And that's okay.

But then you get the lady dancing around Polventon House with her frame, someone singing along while having their feet cared for, or the smile on a resident's face when her family walks through the door.

Those are the moments that make all the other stuff worthwhile. โค๏ธ๐ŸŽถ

๐ŸŽถโค๏ธ Coast to Coast โ€“ One of Those Days โค๏ธ๐ŸŽถ

Some Golden Oldies days are full of dancing, singing and people having a brilliant time.

And then there are days like this one.

Michael started the day at Age UK Newquay, where there were just six people in attendance. It was a much quieter session than usual, with the music turned down and the room feeling a little subdued. But that doesnโ€™t mean the music wasnโ€™t appreciated.

There was even a Happy Birthday thrown in for good measure. ๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽถ

A huge thank you to Donna and all the team at the Newquay Day Centre for having Proper Jobโ€™s Golden Oldies back. Itโ€™s always lovely to be welcomed through the doors, and Michael is already looking forward to seeing everyone again at their Macmillan Coffee Morning at the end of the month. โ˜•๐Ÿ’›

Then it was across to St Maryโ€™s Haven in Penzance.

And this was one of those sessions that reminded Michael exactly why Golden Oldies can sometimes be challenging.

Many of the people Michael performs for live with dementia, and every day can be different. Someone who was delighted to see him on one visit might not understand why heโ€™s there the next time. Someone else might not want to join in at all.

And thatโ€™s okay.

One of the regular ladies Michael has got to know over his visits was clearly very unwell today. It was genuinely upsetting to see someone he knows looking so poorly.

Her visitor had brought along a puppy, though, and she was able to spend some time with it. ๐Ÿถโค๏ธ

Michael really hopes that when he returns, sheโ€™ll be feeling much better and heโ€™ll get to see her again.

And while we're talking about difficult days, Michael has to say something about the carers he meets during these sessions.

They are amazing. All of them. โค๏ธ

Every home and day centre is different, but the patience, kindness, humour and sheer dedication Michael sees from carers is incredible. He genuinely doesn't know how they do the job they do, day in and day out.

Michael gets to turn up for an hour, sing some songs and hopefully bring a bit of happiness.

They are there every day.

He has enormous respect for every single one of them.

There was also a new resident whose family had come along. Her grandson Archie didnโ€™t look entirely convinced that Golden Oldies was going to be his thing ๐Ÿ˜‚ but his nan and daughter soon found themselves up dancing.

And once the family had headed off, Michael managed to win Archieโ€™s nan over completely with โ€œErnie (The Fastest Milkman in the West)โ€. ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ˜‚

Even the waistcoat got a compliment, with one lady telling her carer how much she liked Michaelโ€™s colourful outfit.

So, yesโ€ฆ it was a difficult day.

But it was also a reminder that Golden Oldies isnโ€™t always about packed rooms and people dancing from beginning to end.

Sometimes itโ€™s about one smile.

One song.

One little moment of connection.

And if the music can bring even a little bit of joy on a difficult day, then itโ€™s still been a Proper Job. โค๏ธ๐ŸŽถ

Diary of an (amateur) Thespian โ€“ Entry Twenty Nine ๐ŸŽญ๐ŸŽ„โœจ

๐ŸŽ… Back in Madron tonight for another Elf! The Musical rehearsalโ€ฆ and there was a LOT of Stevie (Buddy) sitting on my lap again. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

๐ŸŽญ I also managed to make Kate break tonight, which Iโ€™m ridiculously pleased about. ๐Ÿ˜

I mean, Iโ€™m supposed to be concentrating, learning my cues and remembering what the bloody hell Iโ€™m supposed to be doingโ€ฆ but making Kate laugh at completely the wrong moment? Thatโ€™ll do nicely. ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐ŸŽฌ Stevie and I are, naturally, consummate professionals.

Obviously. ๐Ÿ˜‡

Apart from the bits where weโ€™re absolutely not. ๐Ÿคฃ

๐Ÿ˜‚ The scene we were working on tonight is going to seriously test our ability to keep straight faces. Iโ€™m saying nothing for now, but when December comes around I want you all to have a guess at which scene it was.

๐Ÿค” I genuinely think weโ€™re going to struggle to get through it without completely losing the plot. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿฆท And then thereโ€™s my bloody tooth.

Because apparently being Father Christmas ๐ŸŽ… wasnโ€™t enough of a challenge, so my teeth have decided to audition for a part as well. ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿ˜– The pain just appears from nowhere, gives me a proper kicking for a few minutes, then disappears again as if nothing has happened. Very considerate. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿ“ธ It happened just before I got out of the van to take the photo tonightโ€ฆ and then again as we started Happy All the Time. ๐ŸŽถ

๐Ÿ˜ฌ Nothing says โ€œHappy All the Timeโ€ quite like trying not to swear because your tooth feels like itโ€™s being attacked with a screwdriver. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

๐ŸŽ… The good news is the opening number is really starting to come together and Iโ€™m getting much closer to finding the Father Christmas voice. ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽ„

๐ŸŽญ Cat gave me some direction tonight and I think Iโ€™ve finally worked out exactly what she wants.

๐ŸŽ„ And where did I get my inspiration from?

A Christmas decoration at Mum and Dadโ€™s ( Jenny & Ken) house that tells the story of The Night Before Christmas. ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐ŸŽ… So while other actors are studying great performances and working on character development, Iโ€™m basically copying a Christmas ornament.

๐Ÿ‘ Outstanding. Absolutely method acting at its finest. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

๐ŸŽถ But honestly, Iโ€™m absolutely loving it. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ˜ด Iโ€™m knackered, ๐Ÿฆท my tooth is playing up, and ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ Iโ€™m still occasionally standing there wondering what the bloody hell Iโ€™m supposed to be doingโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ˜‚ โ€ฆand I wouldnโ€™t miss it for the world.

โค๏ธ I just hope Ruby is proud of her daddy when she sees me playing the big FC in December. ๐ŸŽ…๐ŸŽ„
