Members of Jean's Bothy, Helensburgh have been working hard to get everything together for our one night only Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival exhibition tomorrow night (Wednesday) 6pm - 8pm at the Submarine Centre in Helensburgh. Do come along to support us and see the great variety of ways we've responded to the theme this year, which is IN/VISIBLE.

Want to see our Roots & Shoots interactive activity? Or find out what our What Lies Beneath board is all about? We've been delving into AI, and our writing group has been busy creating pieces too. We've another digital display this year, featuring an animation made with images of over thirty of our members as well as individual responses to the theme from members of the Photography & Wellbeing Group. You could have a go at guessing the invisible emotions, sweep some stuff under a carpet, proudly wear a label or leave it for others to contemplate...there are live musical performances and even a Human Bookery. Don't know what that is? Come along and find out! Refreshments will be available alongside a warm welcome from all of us to all of you.

There's so much to see and it's all free so why not come along to the Submarine Centre this Wednesday anytime between 6-8, bring your family & friends, it will be great to see you there 😁

There are many reasons why you might choose one-to-one photography tuition over attending a class or workshop. Perhaps you are just starting out and don't feel confident enough to share your work with others just yet, or you can't commit to the same day/night of the week every week and have to be a bit more flexible with your time. Whatever the reason, one-to-one tuition means all the time is focused on you and what you want to learn or practise.

Online tuition is £10/hour
Face to face tuition is £20/hour reduced to £15/hour if you book five sessions at once.

For the next two weeks the Photography & Wellbeing Group at Jean's Bothy, Helensburghwill be focusing on ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY. Concentrate your efforts on colour, shape, line, texture and form and think about the moods that you can create with combinations of all these. Consider the materials you choose to photograph - are they reflective or dull, textured or smooth, bright or dark. Abstract photography usually means avoiding anything representational so think about how you might 'abstract' the essence of your subject without necessarily showing the whole thing, or the whole thing in its usual context. You can use light (torches, fairy lights, mirror lights) mirrors, glass in windows, coloured paper, plants, buttons, eggshells, cellophane, tin foil, glassware (anyone recognise my red margarita glass?) just about anything you can think of. How about holding a magnifying glass in front of your camera to get much closer? Or eating some of those chocolates which come with translucent coloured wrappers and using them as coloured 'gels' to change the colour of something more familiar?

Here are a couple useful links that you might want to take a look at:

I'm really pleased to finally announce a new season of photography classes! First up is a six week course in 'slow' photography. You don't need any prior experience with photography and can use any camera (phone or otherwise) that you are comfortable with. Although there will be some elements of tuition in photographic techniques, this course is much more about using photographic practice as a means of enhancing wellbeing so if you would like a more instructional course please do visit the website to see what else is on offer.

Our fortnightly photography walk for the members of Jean's Bothy, Helensburgh took in a short section of the Three Loch's Way yesterday. It was glorious spring weather with the birds singing their hearts out, the trees dusted with new green leaves, the paths dry and the company wonderful. We thought about looking for pathways in among the trees, great shapes, light and shadow and the various merits of chocolate and popcorn. Definitely good for the soul!

This week's theme for the Photography & Wellbeing Group is OUTDOORS to take advantage of the rumoured good forecast for the next few days. I'm going to continue documenting my efforts to improve my mobility by taking walks each day and trying to get a bit farther every time. What would you do?

This week's theme for the Photography & Wellbeing Group at Jean's Bothy, Helensburgh is Pattern & Texture. We met up at Kidston Park for our Photo Walk - and on a day like this it was an absolute treat! Members found patterns and textures in tree bark, park railings, footprints and seaweed, in the grass and the sand and even in shadows!

If you can't get out and about this week, but would still like to have a play with this theme, you could try looking at fabric patterns (and maybe, how you can disrupt them by scrunching the fabric up!), patterns on your crockery, making patterns with objects (anyone got a button box? or a cutlery drawer?) You could even paint your own pattern onto paper and photograph it from all different angles to get some interesting distortions going. The possibilities are endless. If you can get out, or you have a garden, look for patterns and textures in plants - leaves, flowers, stalks, bark! Pavements, windows on a building!

Photographing straight on to a pattern will give the clearest image of it - if you angle your camera or phone you will distort the pattern and depending on that angle you can make it look wider at the front than the back. You could really try to mess with this and create some very strange patterns!

Next week we are meeting at the Bothy, at 12 noon where we will discuss the images made this week, choose next week's theme and have a chat about our ideas for the exhibition. Photography & Wellbeing is open to all Jean's Bothy Members and for all skill levels. You don't need to have a fancy camera - your phone is fine! Look forward to seeing you there!

A lovely evening yesterday for an 'After Dark' workshop for teens at the Helensburgh Art Hub - we wandered around for the entire session looking at the technical issues we face when photographing at night as well as some of the creative opportunities that this brings.

The theme for the Photography & Wellbeing Group at Jean's Bothy, Helensburgh this week is Signs of Spring. We chatted over coffee at the Bothy, identifying some alternative signs of spring that we might look out for this week (increased visitor numbers to the town, springtime changes to retailers' windows and stocks, lighter coloured clothing, jolly umbrellas, new gardening activities, easter and mothers' day creations,) as well as the more traditional subjects such as flowers, buds, and baby animals. Then we got out into the Bothy garden to see what we could find there. I have to say, the garden was looking beautiful under that lovely blue sky and there were signs of spring aplenty!

All members of the Bothy are welcome to join us on Saturdays at noon. We are alternating sessions in the Bothy itself with photowalks around Helensburgh - gentle ambles for the most part so suitable for all ages and fitness levels. You don't need to have a fancy camera - a phone will work just as well. And if you just wish to join us for the chat and a coffee, or just the chat, that's fine too!

Saturday 26th March: meet at Kidston Park, 12 noon. Look for the blue and yellow banner!
