Will you come to Scarborough Fair? Make a lovely day out of it on the train: amble by the sands or on the cliffs, be at the Old Parcels Office in the railway station yard, for the 7.30 show, then you're back on the platform for the train home! What could be nicer? Plus Alexandra Mathie and Angie Cairns in 'Pat Douthwaite: Alive and Kicking' to boot! Two shows: 17th and 18th June. Book here:

One-woman show with live piano and projected images. The play pulls no punches, so get ready for an extraordinary performance – that will certainly get you talking.

No wonder Pat's raging! We had to do the unthinkable and, for the first time ever, break the old theatre rule: we had to postpone two performances! (New dates TBA.) Covid wove its wicked way into our house and decided to stay long enough to infect us both. Alex is still positive and really unwell, and I'm negative but completely wrung out. There was no way we could have loaded up and travelled and performed and everything. But sincere apologies to all, especially those who were planning to come to the performance at the Lillie Gallery on Friday. We do hope you will be able to make it on the re-scheduled date. Watch this space.

This year Heroica Theatre Company celebrates International Women’s Day by honouring the extraordinary German artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945).

Käthe Kollwitz was not merely a sculptor, painter, lithographer and printmaker but a profound social documenter who used her crafts as a voice, often lone, crying out against the derelictions of the twentieth century: especially war, injustice, poverty and hunger.

Kollwitz felt most keenly the plight of women who were so often left to suffer their losses alone and to try vainly to feed children. Her tender, moving depictions all carry – both despite and because of their beauty – trenchant condemnations of war.

After a lifetime of outrageous incidences of side-lining because she was a woman, perhaps it is Kollwitz’s dogged persistence that is to be most admired. She never ceased in her creations – whether in charcoal, paints, print or bronze - that silently railed against the system, and the message in all her works is both deeply affecting and glaringly unavoidable.

In something of a reversal of her lifetime’s experience of marginalisation, Käthe Kollwitz is now honoured most handsomely especially in Berlin, with her sculptures prominent in its parks, squares, main thoroughfares and, of course, a specially designated museum.

Go to Heroica’s International Women’s Day page https://www.heroicatheatrecompany.co.uk/international-womens-day
to read more and see a sample of some of Käthe Kollwitz’s most celebrated works.
