Winston Plowes - Land Artist A place for new pieces and discussion of nature art. I am not trying to control nature, rather ask it for the next dance.

WORKSHOP - Today I spent a very happy hour running my 'Join the Dots...' nature art workshop at Great Haywood Library, Blackburn. I've made some more specific comments on each image but this was a chance to use some unusual materials to make a tiny book, A4 design or larger group piece. We used a variety of natural hand made pigment paints and inks and some interesting tools. Roll on Rishworth tomorrow :-)

433) REFLECTION (for Nik Robson-King) - Sycamore Seeds. Mayroyd Woods, Hebden Bridge, Calderdale. 20th June 2026

There are many things that go through ones mind when spending a few hours in the woodland making a piece of art. On this occasion I was thinking of my friend Nik Robson-King. A life we remembered and celebrated at his funeral this week. I was singing his favourite songs from the ceremony as I placed each seed, thinking that the piece might represent stepping stones on a path to somewhere beyond...

This also becomes my piece for this years summer solstice, made on solstice eve on exactly the same spot I made my winter solstice piece (see previous post). Both pieces are green and red, colours that run through nature and our lives as part of it.

"Join nature artist Winston Plowes for a playful and relaxing hour intuitively making dot art from nature’s resources. In a ‘Pop up Artists Studio’ we will use printing techniques, natural pigments and handmade stamps. We will punch holes in leaves and see if the light comes through. In Joining the Dots… we will be making marks in new ways and laughing in the face of so-called mistakes."

I hope to see you there 🙂

Today I returned to the exact spot I made the piece below, 'Rise', exactly six months ago, Both solstice days :-)

I was surprised to find a few of the cut dogwood twigs (Cornus sanguinea) still there on the woodland floor a stone's throw from my home near Hebden Bridge. (see pic in comments, with a beech nut 'star').

Eagle-eyed viewers might notice that this piece is not quite circular, rather it's an equilateral curve heptagon, with seven curved sides, the same shape as the UK 20p coin.

EVENT, REWILDING THE MIND #3 of 6 - WORSBROUGH MILL

Green amble number three in our 'Rewilding the Mind' series for Creative Recovery and our first at the wonderful Worsbrough Mill where we first met in 2021. The day was much hotter than I expected and we all enjoyed the warm sun watching dragonflies on the mill pond but also the tranquil calm of the woodland. We listened to nature poetry from Robert Macfarlane, Gaia Holmes, Joyce Sutphen and John Updike, We puzzled over mystery words and objects and shared stories together finishing off with ice creams at the mill. We will be back next week to explore the opposite side of the water :-)

Our ethos - "In Rewilding the Mind we will be digging down into nature to reveal surprises and revel in the things we pass by unnoticed every day. Recognising the value in simply stopping, looking and listening. Mapping our place and time in the world as we celebrate the changing seasons. Sharing the enjoyment of a journey through nature together and not knowing what we will find".
