INSECTS - I have spent some time on the beautiful and open expanse of Harden Moor this week with artist, Claire Rookes ( ). On the face of it this is a wild and possibly barren and inhospitable place with not much going on, but actually you just need to refocus, get down on your knees and look a little closer and you will discover magic! We found this 1cm jewel of a green tiger beetle (Cicindela campestris) with its dazzling, metallic green body and cream spots on its wing elytra.

CARDINAL - Sandstone Roof Tile Pieces, Various Branches, Acorn Cups & Rowan Berries. National Trust Gawthorpe Hall, Padiham, Lancashire. 13-15th July 2026

Today I am going to collect the display boards etc from Gawthorpe Hall and say goodbye to the Great Barn. It was a wonderfully atmospheric place to work over three days in July with Claire Rookes ( ). We made this large installation over 15 working hours for the reopening of the 400 year old building which is now fully restored and open to the public (currently on Wednesdays). Here I would like to highlight some of the detail which could easily get swamped in a piece of this size. Around the perimeter we placed acorn cups, each on a tiny clay stand. Some were plain, some were painted white inside with chalk paint. Some had a rowan berry from the car park inside and just one white cup contained a white snowberry from Hebden Bridge.

BLACKBURN NATURE ART WORKSHOP - Part 1) ART FROM THE MARKET

Last week we had such a rewarding and creative day at Blackburn Market. Before I reveal the whole thing, here are some close ups of the main piece we made. Thank you so much to everyone who popped by, had a chat, or lent a hand with our designs. This year, everything we used was natural and recycled by us into art and would have gone in the bin if we hadn't used it. And everything was sourced from the market traders who were super helpful on the day. From the most delicate 'onion skin bridges', lines of crushed egg shells to column of cauliflower stalks, blue cardboard flowers and oyster shells. It was a real reminder to stop and look at the beauty of the things that go in the bin. A special shout out here to Quinn Fletcher who was both inventive and resourceful in liaising with the market traders. Without her, we couldn't have made what we did.

All our resources for the day were provided by Discounts, Stewart greengrocers, Myer's Fishmongers Scott Stewart's Fruit and Veg Blackburn Market and Diner.

433 CHAIN - Gawthorpe Hall, Padiham, Burnley, Lancashire. Black Cherry Leaves & Various Twigs. 09th June 2026

As part of my project to make 'Cardinal' for the reopening of the Great Barn at Gawthorpe Hall last month I made a number of preparatory pieces in and around the estate to get to know the buildings and the woodland and how I might connect the two. This was my penultimate such piece.

This piece, 'Chain'. was a chance to bring my art closer to the great barn as I made this on a really wet day round the back of the estate buildings. It was the first chance for the general public to see my art and ask questions and despite the weather there were some passers by who stopped to ask questions and look at what I had made.

PATTERNS (part 2) - Being rather pattern obsessed, over recent years I have been collecting photographs of the patters on toilet tissue and kitchen roll and some of them are really interesting (honest). Here's part two and the next four designs I have collected. This is a particularly interesting batch! Love the starts (top left). I can see any of these being used as a land art design. MICRO GALLERY PIECE C, LE RAYON VERT - Bayswell Beach, Dunbar. Mixed Media. 18th July 2026
European Land Art Festival DAY 3 of 4

There are many styles of land art and today instead of attempting another large scale piece I opted to make probably the smallest things of anyone on the day in my little corner of a hot and busy Bayswell Beach. I later assembled these on a table in reception at The Dolphin Inn in Dunbar as a sort of pop up temporary gallery (see pic in comments).

I found a piece of glass which I used to scratch lines (or rays) on this small single stone.

This was piece 'C', 'Le Rayon Vert' which refers to the meteorological phenomena that can occur transiently around the moment of sunset or sunrise. When the conditions are right, a distinct green spot is briefly visible above the Sun's upper limb lasting for mere seconds. Old maritime traditions suggest that a person who witnesses the green flash will be granted deep insight into their own heart and the feelings of others.
