Last week I went to see the film 'Wilding' based on the book by Isabella Tree and the re-wilding of Knepp Estate . I felt transported by the nature photography, and seeing the transformation I had read about and followed through social media. Below is an account of why the book 'Wilding' meant a lot to me and inspired some of my work.

When I left southern Africa, and settled in Northumberland, England, I sensed that nature was in trouble. To my eye, there were so few insects. And I was struck by the cultural aversion to said creatures. Over the years I have noticed the depletion of lapwings, swallows, chaffinches, dippers, and this year blue t**s because there are hardly any aphids for them to eat. Wild life is visibly depleted / depleting. So when 'Wilding' was published, I felt affirmed in my judgement. I went on to read several other books and I was inspired to make a visual summary of the efforts at re-wilding in Britain (image one). Image two (SWIPE RIGHT) is a visual list of the inspiration I derived from the book 'Wilding' . My pigs are wild boar, because I like their shapes! But wild pigs are pigs, and are important for seed germination.

Parsley > parsley pesto > delicious plate of food

A thing I try to do is grow food. Why? 1) To reduce my carbon footprint (no transport, no packaging 2) to take care of the soil under my stewardship, that precious medium that interacts with seeds, microbes, sun and rain to sustains life 3) for my spirit: growing food keeps me close to the wonders of the Earth, the seasons, the magic of germination and the resulting gift of food on my plate. 4) for joy.

Carlisle Creative Popup Gift Shop open all of this week. Such good vibes! Treat yourself to visiting the historic part of Carlisle. How lovely it is! And within walking distance from the station, the Cathedral is quite, quite beautiful with uplifting gardens and a great, airy, chill out cafe. Such a surprise! THEN, right next door, through a wee arch, is Paternoster Row, quaint and treelined on the Cathedral side. And POP, the Popup Shop, so full of gifts and treats for yourself. Gorgeous things for your gift drawer, for early bird Christmas shoppers, gesture presents like book marks. All put together by crafting enthusiasts Hannah and Becca, who have been just wonderful to work with, so organised and brilliant at setting up the shop!

Looking for something local interest, a reminder of your stay in the lakes, borders or Carlisle? At the weekend we went to a church Christening. We wanted to take a gift, but somehow toys and clothes didn't cut it. Just another toy. And something silver feels so yesterday. We thought of a book, but we didn't know which books little Eva has already, and didn't want to duplicate.

Ha! Silly me! The answer was right under my nose! A personalised Rewilding Print! ... give Eva the story of Rewilding Britain. (The print comes with a legend and more.)

I thought about the colour she might like when she's a little bigger. Having had girls myself, and a granddaughter, and ALSO having tried to resist the stereotypical pink with all three, I knew that girls still like pink. I like dark pinks myself, and rose madder is one of my favourite colours in the world! It felt right for Eva. I went with rose madder, but with slightly more shade, to give it an ashier rose colour.

Both my grandchildren have a print, one 'Savannah Woodland', the other 'Rewilding Britain'. And they have been a great resource for telling stories. I tell them stories about woodland and hedgerows and get them to find all the dormice in the picture. I tell them about the white storks that travel all the way from southern Africa to Europe, and now England too, to raise a family in our summer. And I tell them how the deer are beautiful but when there are too many, they nibble down baby trees so the little trees don't often get a chance to grow up. And I tell them about red and grey squirrels, and about how pine martens help red squirrels to return. I tell them about beavers, how they coppice trees to build dams that enable wetland plants to grow, which all makes the water cleaner when it moves downstream more slowly with less chances of flooding. There are dozens of stories to be told from this print, and it is a perfect gift for welcoming a new baby into the world we live in.

Wild Woodland detail. In my design I include details from what I learn. Here a dormouse is about to nibble on a honeysuckle flower. The honeysuckle vine has climbed a beech tree in a wood. (top right corner of my ‘Wild Woodland ‘ card.)

A lot of woodland has been cleared for agriculture. Many woods are isolated pockets that don’t connect together. This threatens the gene pool of dormice, weakening their chances of survival into the future. Planting connecting hedgerow corridors with intermittent trees is helping the dormouse keep its place in our heritage narrative.

Having a dip in Fairy Pools, Isle of Skye. Cold water swimming gets me to remember how good it is to be alive. Sometimes, in our worrying times, events and fears consume us and we get bleak. To get into that freezing cold water is a meditative process of self calming - an 'I can do this', process. And once my body has adjusted, I don't want to get out ... ever. I think of nothing else but the magnificent surroundings, the minty thrill of cold water, and having not another thought in the world.

It is a divine feeling. And it gives strength to carry on and do even a one person 'itty bitty' thing for this most beautiful Earth that we live on and within. Each Earth friendly thing we do is an act of resistance.

One thing I try to do, as a form of such resistance, is grow food. It's a way to organically nurture my small square of garden soil, reduce pesticides, herbicides etc., reduce transport emissions, and lessen plastic packaging. It's a tiny thing, a speck really, but it can be a small part of a whole big thing, if people who have a garden can do it. Imagine that! If we all grow more food!
