When something works, why change it. These tools look very familiar to 21st century artisans . Yet, this is what they would be using 3,500 years ago ish.

Tools of the trade in Bronze Age Britain

When it comes to making troughs, boxes, tool handles and dugout canoes I can rely on a wide and varied selection of woodworking tools from later Bronze Age Britain. Many of the tool types are incredibly similar to those found in relatively modern tool boxes, just with a different metal for the blade.

While there is evidence of turning wood from early Bronze Age Britain, it is only in the latter part of the period that we really see a bloom of more specialist tools. As well as the more simple tanged chisels of earlier periods, we start to see gouges of all sizes and hook knives. Sadly we don't get to see the projects these tools were used on because they only survive in special preservation conditions at sites like Must Farm (@) or Crannogs such as the @. The frequency of these tools in metalwork hoards suggests they were relatively common place, but its likely there were specialist woodworkers.

I'll be working with the team at @ through the year making some Bronze Age boats, but we will no doubt be making some smaller objects too! You'll be able to see us in action during our special open weekends, check out Stanwick Lake's profile for updates.
