One man’s love letters from the front line

Towards the close of WW2, Army signaller Dennis Marshall wrote a series of moving letters to his fiancée, tracing his journey and his exp

eriences. Dennis' grandson, trumpeter Tom Poulson, with composer Alistair MacDonald and director Susan Worsfold, explores these letters in an extraordinary immersive performance, with music reflecting the technology and sounds of the era. Inspired by the Last Post bugle call, the work is a very personal exploration of war and memory in an intimate setting, where audiences can experience the letters together.

The Last Post comes to The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre, Havant, for 2 performances on the 27th April.

Towards the close of World War II, army signaller Dennis Marshall wrote a series of moving letters to his fiancée, tracing his journey and his experiences. Dennis's grandson, trumpeter Tom Poulson, will explore these letters in an immersive musical performance by electroacoustic composer Alistair MacDonald that reflects the technology and sounds of the era. Inspired by the Last Post bugle call, the work is a very personal exploration of war and memory in an intimate setting, where audiences can experience the letters together in the round through a combination of music and spoken word. For his performance at The Spring, Tom will be the same age (30) as his grandfather was when he wrote the letters, making this show even more poignant.

It's time for our final show at Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Made In Scotland, Summerhall and The Army in Scotland. Come along to Army@theFringe at 3:30pm to see our ⭐⭐⭐⭐ piece.

"The music, based on the Last Post trumpet salute, was endlessly fascinating – not only the incredible range of sounds that can be coaxed out of a trumpet, not just musical notes, muted or clear, but also a vast range of percussive sounds made with tongue, lips, and maybe even teeth on the mouthpiece, by tapping the bell with a mute, and simply by breathing through the instrument: all this sampled, mixed, jumbled and echoed, with Tom able to duet, trio and even quartet with himself."

Our trumpeter Tom H Poulson spoke to The Scotsman about our piece and it's involvement at Army@the Fringe, “For me, the most striking aspect is Dennis’s focus on the every day. He comments on the darker experiences of his service, but he puts particular emphasis on his longing for home, to be with his fiancée and to return to his job as an English teacher.

“My grandfather was a socialist pacifist, but while disagreeing with any form of warfare he felt it was his duty to serve his country. He worked as a signaller and never fired a weapon throughout the war, even when caught in conflict. Ours isn’t a military story, but a human story in a military context, and sadly there’s still conflict around the world which we’re all connected to in one way or another. We hope this work will remind us all of our shared humanity.”
