🔮It tells the story of the remarkable Hastings guesthouse that around the middle of the last century was home to visiting politicians, scientists, intellectuals and radicals.

✨It was also where the master magician Aleister Crowley, so-called 'Wickedest Man in the World', spent his final years, playing chess, injecting drugs and receiving an impressive cast of visitors, including Kenneth Grant, Gerald Gardner, Augustus John, James Laver and Richard Ellmann.

📖 Netherwood: Last Resort of Aleister Crowley is published by Accumulator Press

💥 Contributors include: A Gentleman of Hastings (Antony Clayton)Essay: Frater Amor Fati (Gary Lachman)Essay: English Heretic (Andy Sharp)Foreword: Anok Pe (David Tibet)

🌊This new revised limited paperback edition of 500 contains two additional articles about Aleister Crowley’s youthful chalk climbing achievements at Beachy Head in East Sussex and over 40 colour and black and white illustrations. Each 260-page copy also contains an envelope of enclosures including facsimiles of brochures for the Netherwood guesthouse, postcards and a bookmark.

🪸 We are thrilled to be working with St Leonards artist Gerald Davies.

🧜‍♀️ His pieces explore British folklore, medieval imagery, coastal life and maritime traditions, drawing on influences like Heywood Summer, Hugo Winder-Lind and Quentin Blake.

⚓ He works primarily using sgraffito, scratching through layers, inspired by the scrimshaw carvings made by sailors on long voyages, all housed in vintage frames. Find out more about Gerald at our website.

🦈 If you've been into our George Street shop, you may have seen his work, which is proving hugely popular with our visitors. During the summer, the store is open week-round, 11am-5pm.

🎆 It's Old Town Carnival week!

🚲 From the steep uphill challenge of the bike race to twilight walks and seagull cry competitions, from gurning fests and winkle tossing to the fancy-dress rough-and-tumble of the Pram Race, which runs chaotically right past the front of our shop, Hastings Old Town week is eccentric, generous and a lot of fun!

Come and join in. Pick up a programme from our shop on George Street.
