Meadow browns take two...I had a go at softening the background colours (by re-wetting and dabbing paint off with a paper towel). I think it helps to keep the focus on the butterflies and creates contrasting tones. In my original (photo 2) all the colours were a similar strength so your eyes weren't drawn so much to the butterflies. Thanks to Sandra at Paint Stitch Bead for the very helpful advice. This painting has been a great way for me to experiment with techniques. I really value constructive criticism, so please always feel free to offer thoughts and opinions. 😊

Meadow brown butterflies on bramble flowers in watercolour and ink. Female meadow browns are more orange than males, so I think these are both females. 🧡

This was supposed to be a delicate watercolour using a photo I took, but I went in too heavy handed, then lost patience. 🙄 I was going to give up on it but instead tried a few techniques...painting a loose, blurry background with some dark shadowy patches for depth. I still wasn't happy so I added sketchy pen lines to try and salvage it. They definitely helped. It's OK and was a good learning task!

Watercolour isn't an easy medium. 😆🙄

A mug full of florals I painted in watercolour. 🌼🌿🌾🪻

The Cornwall cottage we're staying in has some beautiful mugs (see photo 4). I love the deep, coastal blue. I thought it would go well with some oxeye daisies and red valerian. We've seen so many gorgeous wildflowers along the coast path, but the oxeye daisies have been the most abundant so far. Understated, they remind me of fried eggs on stalks! 🍳
I managed to capture little Toffee running through them. 🥰
The grasses are also abundant 🌾🌾...spreading their pollen (which always sets off my hay-fever 🙄).

Is it much too much to have 3 2-Tone tshirts? 🤔 Got a little carried away printing my 2 Tone design on some tshirts ready for summer. 😎 ☀️
Really chuffed with them. 😁 I know black on white is traditional, but I love it on pink! 🩷

I've been putting this off because I was nervous about how well the print would come out on fabric but it's really crisp. It's not as solid black as I get on paper but I like the effect. They need to dry for a couple of weeks, then I'll iron them to set the paint and finally wash them. They can fade very slightly in the first wash so 🤞 it's not too much!
I used Cranfield Caligo Safewash Relief Inks.

Cosy Sunday afternoon painting fairly random (but all edible!) watercolours from my new book 'How to Paint It - 100 simplewatercolor paintings' by artist 🖌🎨
Great for learning about colour mixing and developing my skills. Toffee is having a go too, she's showing promise!! 😆🥰
Sometimes it's just nice to follow a tutorial, rather than be faced with a blank page to come up with a new idea!
