WHERE TO FIND ME…
A little round-up of where my paintings can currently be found…

It’s lovely to realise that my work is hanging in four galleries at the moment, from London to Surrey, Cumbria and the Norfolk coast.

So, if you’ve been thinking about seeing my paintings in person, or perhaps there’s one you’ve had your eye on, here’s where you can find them.

A TRIP BACK IN TIME…

I hadn’t seen these paintings hanging together for a while.
After my Dad died I made a small series of contemporary portraits of my two daughters. They were quite different from the work I was making at the time, and, looking back, I think they were partly my way of holding onto something familiar during a difficult period.

Fast forward four years and my youngest daughter has just hung the portraits of herself and her sister in her home.

I love seeing them there!

Paintings have a funny way of taking on a life of their own once they leave the studio. They become part of someone else’s story, their home and their everyday life.

And sometimes they find their way back to you, unexpectedly.

A little bit of London news…

I’m really pleased to share that three of my paintings have been included in the Autumn Show at Thompson’s Gallery Thompson's Gallery in London, and it’s my first time showing there.

It feels rather lovely to see my work heading to London, especially with a gallery whose programme I’ve admired for some time.

The exhibition runs from 22 September – 9 October, alongside work by a wonderful group of artists.

A small step, perhaps, but one I’m very happy about.

When in doubt, paint it out…..

Yesterday’s painting felt too twee.

So I painted over it. 😂

This morning I got out the Gelli plate and started again - and somewhere along the way, three black and white bowls appeared.

A little Japanese influence, lots of texture and marks, and suddenly it feels much more like me.

Funny how a painting can change direction completely.

Sometimes a painting just isn’t quite… me.

I challenged myself with the colours in this little flower painting, and I loved making it — but somewhere along the way it started to feel a bit too twee for my liking.

So there was only one thing to do.

Paint over it. 😂

The good thing about working with paint is that nothing is ever quite as disastrous as it seems. It’s only paint, after all.

Back to the drawing board…

WHAT CAN YOU MAKE FROM TWO COLOURS?

This little auricula started with a photograph I took at the wonderful auricula theatre at Calke Abbey National Trust Calke Abbey

For this one I chose another limited palette - teal and yellow ochre, with black and white - and spent some time mixing all the colours I could find before starting the painting.

I love this part of the process. Two colours that seem quite simple on their own can suddenly produce an extraordinary range of greens, blues, soft greys and muddy, unexpected neutrals.

The little paintings are becoming a kind of colour diary for me, each one a flower, a memory and a new palette to explore.

And so the garden grows…

A NEW EVENT FOR ME….

I’m delighted to be taking part in Open Studios & Artisan Market at Pateley Bridge Makers Yard for the first time on Friday 21st & Saturday 22nd August.

I’ll have my own little stand, bringing along a selection of original paintings, giclée prints and cards - so there’ll be plenty to browse, whether you’re looking for an original piece or simply want to take home a little bit of colour.

I’ve never done this event before, so I’m looking forward to discovering it and meeting some of the other makers taking part.

If you’re in or around Pateley Bridge, do come and say hello. I’d love to see you.

COLOURS I AVOID….
I don’t think I’ve ever chosen to paint with reds and magentas before.

They’re colours I’ve usually walked straight past.

As part of the Colour Cure course by ARTfuel Studio, I’ve been working with a deliberately limited palette - just warm and cool versions of one colour, plus black and white. Before painting, I make what they call a ‘test drive’ mixing as many variations as I can from those few colours.

Something unexpected happened.

Instead of bright reds, I found soft, dusty pinks, deep aubergines and quiet neutrals that feel much more like me.

It’s a lovely reminder that sometimes the colours we avoid have something unexpected to offer.

A PATTERNED PAIR

One last look at this painting before it heads off to its new home.

I filmed a few moments while I was working on it, and watching them back reminds me how much of painting is about patience. Looking, changing, scraping back, adding another layer... and trusting that something will eventually emerge.

It’s always a strange feeling saying goodbye to a painting, but I’m delighted this one has found someone who wanted to live with it.

A NEW BEGINNING

This week, two paintings have found their way to Zillah Bell Gallery in Thirsk for the Summer Exhibition, which opens on Saturday.

There’s always something special about seeing work leave the studio and begin a new chapter. After weeks of painting, adjusting, stepping back and looking again, they finally find their place on a gallery wall.

‘Willow & Blossom’ and ‘Rosa’ are two pieces which reflect one part of my practice, both are rooted in the same fascination with colour, balance and quiet composition.

If you’re visiting North Yorkshire over the summer, the exhibition is well worth a look. Alongside my work you’ll find a wonderful mix of paintings, ceramics, jewellery and printmaking by artists from across the UK.

I hope you’ll enjoy them if you happen to visit.
