WHY OPEN MY STUDIO?

People sometimes ask why artists open their studios.

Of course there are paintings to see - but for me, it’s about more than that.

I love watching people spend time with colour, texture and surface in a way that isn’t possible on a screen. I love the conversations that happen, the unexpected connections, the stories people bring with them.

And sometimes, seeing how paintings are made reminds visitors of their own creativity too - an old sketchbook, a forgotten class, a desire to try something new.

If you’ve never visited an Open Studio before, please don’t feel you need to be “an art person”, and there’s absolutely no pressure to buy anything.

Come in, have a wander, ask questions, look closely, be curious.

Open Studio begins this weekend.

A Look Inside….

With Open Studios just around the corner, I thought I’d share a small glimpse of what you’ll find here.

The studio and our home is filling with familiar still lifes, newer abstract work, small framed paintings, a new card and giclée print range and my Postcards from Harrogate series - all gathered together for June.

There’ll be paintings to browse, details to discover, and plenty of colour, surface and quiet conversation.

If you’re planning to visit, it would be lovely to see you. If you need location and directions just send me a message!

If you’ve never visited an Open Studio before, please don’t feel hesitant about coming in - there’s absolutely no pressure to buy! You’re very welcome to simply browse, ask questions, and enjoy seeing the work in real life.

FROM GALLERY WALL….
The studio is filling up with still life paintings ready for June Open Studios…

Two similar pieces recently found new homes through .point.contemporary in Cromer, chosen by visitors spending time on the Norfolk coast.

I always love the thought of paintings travelling on with people - becoming part of another place, another everyday setting.

I’ll have similar work available in the studio in June, alongside newer paintings and smaller studies.

WHY…. do I open my studio?

I open my studio because I value the conversations that happen in there.

Seeing work in real life is very different to seeing it on a screen - scale, colour and surface all come into play. It allows space for questions, quiet looking, and for connections that don’t feel rushed.

Open Studios offer a chance to slow down and share how work is made, and that’s more and more important to me.

POSTCARDS from ….

Lately I’ve been making a small series of paintings called Postcards from Harrogate.

Small works inspired by gathered moments, colours, objects, and quiet observations close to home.

Each piece is mounted and ready to fit a standard A4 frame - something simple, original, and easy to live with.

They’ll all be available during my Open Studio in June, alongside larger paintings and new work in progress.

If you spot one you’d like to know more about, feel free to send me a message here. Any remaining works will also be added to my website after Open Studios.

MIRABILIA

This piece found a home recently through
chosen as a birthday gift, which feels especially meaningful.

There’s something I love about that…
a painting becoming part of a moment, a memory, a space in someone’s life.

Sharing a few glimpses here - from early stages to the finished piece.

I’m always grateful when a piece connects like this.

A Shared Table

Thinking about the objects that we gather around -
bowls, fragments, patterns passed between hands over time.

Each one holding something,
each one part of a quiet arrangement.

This piece came together through layering and placement,
finding a balance between repetition and difference.

LATELY….
….my starting point has shifted…

I’ve been working with old book pages - painting over them, cutting them back, moving them around until something begins to settle.

It feels more instinctive.
More about composition, balance, and knowing when to stop.

These are the early stages of a few new pieces, slowly finding their way.

Open Studios coming soon
