A NEW EVENT FOR ME….

I’m delighted to be taking part in Open Studios & Artisan Market at Pateley Bridge Makers Yard for the first time on Friday 21st & Saturday 22nd August.

I’ll have my own little stand, bringing along a selection of original paintings, giclée prints and cards - so there’ll be plenty to browse, whether you’re looking for an original piece or simply want to take home a little bit of colour.

I’ve never done this event before, so I’m looking forward to discovering it and meeting some of the other makers taking part.

If you’re in or around Pateley Bridge, do come and say hello. I’d love to see you.

COLOURS I AVOID….
I don’t think I’ve ever chosen to paint with reds and magentas before.

They’re colours I’ve usually walked straight past.

As part of the Colour Cure course by ARTfuel Studio, I’ve been working with a deliberately limited palette - just warm and cool versions of one colour, plus black and white. Before painting, I make what they call a ‘test drive’ mixing as many variations as I can from those few colours.

Something unexpected happened.

Instead of bright reds, I found soft, dusty pinks, deep aubergines and quiet neutrals that feel much more like me.

It’s a lovely reminder that sometimes the colours we avoid have something unexpected to offer.

Have you ever changed your mind about a colour?

A PATTERNED PAIR

One last look at this painting before it heads off to its new home.

I filmed a few moments while I was working on it, and watching them back reminds me how much of painting is about patience. Looking, changing, scraping back, adding another layer... and trusting that something will eventually emerge.

It’s always a strange feeling saying goodbye to a painting, but I’m delighted this one has found someone who wanted to live with it.

Thank you to everyone who has visited ‘Halcyon’ The Point Contemporary and spent time with the work, and a special thank you to the buyer!

A NEW BEGINNING

This week, two paintings have found their way to Zillah Bell Gallery in Thirsk for the Summer Exhibition, which opens on Saturday.

There’s always something special about seeing work leave the studio and begin a new chapter. After weeks of painting, adjusting, stepping back and looking again, they finally find their place on a gallery wall.

‘Willow & Blossom’ and ‘Rosa’ are two pieces which reflect one part of my practice, both are rooted in the same fascination with colour, balance and quiet composition.

If you’re visiting North Yorkshire over the summer, the exhibition is well worth a look. Alongside my work you’ll find a wonderful mix of paintings, ceramics, jewellery and printmaking by artists from across the UK.

I hope you’ll enjoy them if you happen to visit.

REFRACTION 1 ….
is currently showing Tarpey Gallery as part of their summer Open exhibition.

At yesterday’s busy Private View, another artist asked me where my painting was — she’d been expecting one of my vessel paintings and hadn’t realised Refraction I was mine. That made me smile.

This painting marks a newer direction in my practice — more abstract, more spacious, built through layers of paint. Its colours and geometry were shaped by a visit to Casa Luis Barragán in Mexico City, where colour, light and architecture left a lasting impression.

It was a pleasure to see the work on the wall, and to spend time with artist friends and visitors moving through the exhibition.

The show runs until 9 August.

NOW ONLINE

The remaining Postcards from Harrogate are now available on my website, alongside a new set of Nordic-inspired greetings cards.

Small paintings, simple forms, nuanced colours — pieces made to keep, frame or send.

If you missed Open Studios, this is your chance to take a look.

If you visited and had your eye on something — or couldn’t make it this time — the remaining pieces are now on my website.

WHAT A WEEKEND!

Thank you to everyone who visited during the first Open Studio weekend.

There were conversations about paintings, colour, process, textiles, memories, favourite bowls, Mexico, gardens, collage, and all sorts of unexpected things in between. That’s one of the joys of opening a studio - the connections that happen around the work.

Several paintings found new homes, and it was a pleasure to see visitors spending time looking closely, asking questions, and discovering pieces that resonated with them.

If you couldn’t make it last weekend, there’s still one more chance to visit. You’ll find familiar still lifes, newer abstract paintings, Postcards from Harrogate, and plenty of opportunities to browse at your own pace.

And if you’ve never visited an Open Studio before, please don’t feel you need to know anything about art or buy anything. You’re very welcome to simply come in, look around, and enjoy the experience!

WHY OPEN MY STUDIO?

People sometimes ask why artists open their studios.

Of course there are paintings to see - but for me, it’s about more than that.

I love watching people spend time with colour, texture and surface in a way that isn’t possible on a screen. I love the conversations that happen, the unexpected connections, the stories people bring with them.

And sometimes, seeing how paintings are made reminds visitors of their own creativity too - an old sketchbook, a forgotten class, a desire to try something new.

If you’ve never visited an Open Studio before, please don’t feel you need to be “an art person”, and there’s absolutely no pressure to buy anything.

Come in, have a wander, ask questions, look closely, be curious.

Open Studio begins this weekend.

A Look Inside….

With Open Studios just around the corner, I thought I’d share a small glimpse of what you’ll find here.

The studio and our home is filling with familiar still lifes, newer abstract work, small framed paintings, a new card and giclée print range and my Postcards from Harrogate series - all gathered together for June.

There’ll be paintings to browse, details to discover, and plenty of colour, surface and quiet conversation.

If you’re planning to visit, it would be lovely to see you. If you need location and directions just send me a message!

If you’ve never visited an Open Studio before, please don’t feel hesitant about coming in - there’s absolutely no pressure to buy! You’re very welcome to simply browse, ask questions, and enjoy seeing the work in real life.
