Harlow Sculpture Town Harlow Art Trust is the guardian of Harlow’s sculpture collection and runs the Gibberd Gallery.

The purpose built gallery is on the mezzanine floor in the Civic Centre overlooking the picturesque water gardens and its sculptures by Rodin, Frink and Moore. The Gallery has a permanent collection of over fifty important 20th century watercolours including Piper , Bawden, Nash, Blackadder and Victoria Crowe. There are regular exhibitions including sculpture, an Open, talks and workshops. The

Friends of Harlow Sculpture and Gibberd Gallery are an active group who can offer organised tours of the sculptures and also have an exciting programme of trips and events.”

Today we are celebrating two artworks that are on display in our permanent gallery for the first time since being gifted to us 🎨🎁

‘Bass Rock Summer Evening’, a painting by John Houston and ‘Seagate and Boat’, a pastel drawing by Jack Knox were kindly gifted to us in 2024 by Hugh Kerr, a Scottish former MEP and an early trustee of Harlow Art Trust.

Both pieces are by Scottish artists. John Houston OBE RSA (1930-2008) was a painter who became head of painting at Edinburgh College of Art. He was married to the Scottish painter and printmaker Dame Elizabeth Blackadder DBE RA RSA HonRWA (1931-2021), whose pieces ‘Hillside Traquair’, ‘Cat and Flowers’ and ‘Honfleur’ are part of the Sir Frederick Gibberd Collection of British Watercolours and Drawings displayed at the Gibberd Gallery.

Jack Knox RSA RSW RGI (1936-2015), a leading Scottish artist, was a painter and draughtsman who became head of painting at Glasgow School of Art.

Check out this ssscary sssnake sssculpture! 🐍

Today we’re celebrating ‘Fearsome Venom Tooth’ a wonderfully clever sculpture by budding young artist William, a year 3 pupil from Jerounds Primary Academy, on display now at the Gibberd Gallery 🎨

Its scaly head is bubble wrap, its forked tongue is made of plastic straws, but best of all, its bendy body is made of bottle caps kindly donated by a local pub during the World Cup! ⚽️ William was inspired to make it as snakes are his favourite animals.

Members of Jerounds’ Art Council were due to visit the gallery for a workshop but it was sadly postponed due to a red heatwave warning. However, we were delighted when William later showed up at the gallery to hand over his masterpiece!

Before the school summer holiday draws to a close, why not come and see this brilliant sculpture, as well as many more animal-themed artworks in ‘Our Sculptures & Other Animals’, on until Saturday 19 September 🐾

Celebrating International Dog Day with
‘Fishermen’ by William Roberts

On show at the Gibberd Gallery as part of ‘Our Sculptures & Other Animals’. It is also part of the Sir Frederick Gibberd Watercolour Collection.

William Roberts RA was born in London in 1895. He was a War Artist in World War I and II. He studied at St. Martin’s School of Art and the Slade School. He painted everyday scenes and portraits in oil and watercolour. His early work was influenced by Cubism and he was a member of the Vorticists. His style is clearly his own.

🎨 Final free family summer holiday art workshop! 🎨

Our Velo Artists have been rolling into locations around Harlow on their bikes ready to deliver fun arty activities with an animal theme.

Our final stop this summer holiday is The Water Gardens on Friday 21 August, where Velo Artists Jake & Farah will get you making miniature clay sculptures inspired by Henry Moore’s ‘Sheep in a Field’ print, which you’ll find nearby in the Gibberd Gallery as part of the exhibition ‘Our Sculptures & Other Animals’. We’ll also be running fun arty activities in the gallery itself, so don’t miss it!

Our Velo Artists are rolling into locations around Harlow on their bikes ready to deliver fun arty activities with an animal theme.

Next stop is Bishopsfield on Monday 17 August, where Velo Artists Jack, Jim & Louis will get you making miniature clay sculptures of some of Harlow’s iconic sculptures and the brilliant Sports Coaches from Changing Lives will get you moving with exciting sporty games!

Have you seen our lion? 🦁🤔 Help us remember a lost sculpture!

The Gibberd Gallery and Civic Centre are feeling like a zoo at the moment! We’ve got our new exhibition ‘Our Sculptures & Other Animals’ in full swing, we’ve been taken over by lions from the Lions on the Loose Trail run by St. Clare Hospice, and amongst it all we’re remembering one of our long lost animal sculptures.

‘Lion’, AKA ‘Lion and Serpent’, ‘Lion with a Snake’ or ‘Lion Crushing a Serpent’ is an 1832 sculpture by Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875), a French Romantic sculptor known for portraying animals in their most familiar nature with great anatomical precision. He was nicknamed the ‘Michelangelo of the Menagerie’ by 19th century critic Théophile Gautier.

Harlow was lucky to have a bronze version of the sculpture, bought by Harlow Art Trust in 1957. It was built into a wall in the Rivermill area of the town. Sadly it was stolen in 1987 and hasn’t been seen since.

Although the sculpture itself is long gone, we’re helping to keep its memory alive. As well as displaying a photo of the sculpture in the Civic Centre, our Velo Artist Louis Loveless used it as the inspiration for a drawing activity in our recent Cycle, Create & Move workshop at The Stow, teaching a new generation about a long lost piece of Harlow history 🎨

Our Velo Artists are rolling into locations around Harlow on their bikes ready to deliver fun arty activities with an animal theme.

Their next stop will be Bush Fair on Friday 14 August, where Velo Artists Jack, Jim and Farah will be running some free creative activities inspired by the town’s animal sculptures. They will be joined by the amazing Sports Coaches from Changing Lives so there will be plenty of sporty fun alongside active art making!

Love animals and art? Don’t miss our brand new exhibition ‘Our Sculptures & Other Animals’ at the Gibberd Gallery, on now until 19 September! 🎨 🐾

We’ve searched our collections and selected sculptures, paintings, drawings and prints that feature all kinds of animals, from dogs and horses, to donkeys, birds and even a moose! And, as it’s , we of course have cats in all different styles!

We have artworks by renowned artists such as Henry Moore, Elisabeth Frink and Edward Bawden.

You’ll have great fun exploring the exhibition, especially if you use our creative activity sheets to hunt for the animals hidden in the artworks or the words hidden in our word searches! 🔍

A huge thank you to Elaine Tribley for curating the exhibition.

And, last but not least we have two wonderful painted ‘Little Lions’ by Passmores Academy and Stewards Academy for you to discover as part of the brilliant Lions On The Loose Trail by St Clare Hospice. 🦁 From Mondays to Wednesdays they are on view on the ground floor of the Civic Centre.

Our Velo Artists are rolling into locations around Harlow on their bikes ready to deliver fun arty activities with an animal theme.

Their next stop will be The Water Gardens on Friday 7 August, where new Velo Artists David and Jake will be running some free creative activities inspired by the town’s animal sculptures. Come along and get inventive with some word games and active with some expressive art making! We will also be running some fun activities nearby in the Gibberd Gallery, so there’ll be plenty to choose from!
