CALL OUT

We are looking for two actors with a connection to South West England - who are comfortable with movement, music, and co-creation - for the next stage of development of a new play.

Conceived by Torbay-based writer Holly Fitzpatrick, LAVENDER is a furiously funny, feminist play about fighting for authorship of a shared past with someone you don’t speak to anymore.

Lucy and Nancy traverse gender, faith, politics and time in a soaring non-linear narrative.

Our project seeks to experiment, connect and immerse the play in the q***r landscape of Devon. We begin with a week-long R&D, in which we’ll investigate themes of education and class, leading to a scratch sharing and discussion. Then, in partnership with Villages in Action, we will undertake creative residencies in Devon. This part will conclude with performances at Exeter Phoenix.

We particularly encourage applications from actors who have lived experience of LAVENDER’s themes, and are passionate about our mission to give voice to LGBTQIA+ communities in the South West.

DATES:

R&D
10am to 6pm on 12-16 April
12pm to 9pm on 12 May

RESIDENCIES
9am to 5pm on 19-22 May
9am to 5pm on 26-29 May
9am to 5pm on 2-5 June
9am to 5pm on 9-10 June

The rate is £150 per day for 22 days, so a total fee of £3300. Accommodation and travel for the R&D is fully covered.

Applicants must have a base in the South West, ideally Devon, for the duration of the Residencies. Travel expenses for this phase will be confirmed where relevant upon casting.

Our wonderful writer Holly Fitzpatrick talks below about how these character came to be 🐚😢😡

"As soon as I entered my room at university accommodation, I got out my laptop and just wrote. Spilling onto the page were two women accusing one another for being a morally wrong woman.

One woman was blunt, crude, a sadistic wing-plucker of flies, whilst another was perfect and organised, with plaited hair and flowing dresses.

One was Nancy and one was Lucy, and both of them, at the time at least, were me: my deepest secrets, my confessions, my flaws criticised at one turn and loved the next, my truth, my bis*xuality."

NEW PLAY BY SOUTH WEST WRITER RETURNS TO THE STAGE WITH A BRISTOL SHARING THIS FEBRUARY

On 8th February 2023, LAVENDER, a play by Torbay-based playwright Holly Fitzpatrick, will share an exclusive reading in Bristol.

LAVENDER celebrates LGBTQ+ creativity in the South West, presenting crude and chaotic histories of growing up against Devon’s eroding coastline. The reading will be a script-in-hand sharing with an introduction by our team. Casting will be announced shortly.

The Wardrobe Theatre is a fringe studio venue and thriving arts hub in the heart of Bristol, showcasing the best theatre-makers from around the UK since 2011. Their programme is a lovingly curated mix of theatre, comedy, storytelling, poetry, dance, cabaret, drag, and new writing, with an emphasis on emerging artists and Bristol-based work.

In 2021 LAVENDER secured a place on Exeter Fringe Festival’s inaugural artist development programme. From here, the team formed close partnerships with Exeter Phoenix, Theatre Royal Plymouth and VAULT Festival.

LAVENDER received Arts Council funding in 2022 for rehearsals and performances at the venues mentioned, in a phase which culminated in sold-out performances at the Omnibus Theatre in Clapham, South London. In February, the piece was featured on BBC Spotlight.

Writer Holly Fitzpatrick is a South West playwright, facilitator, and theatre maker, set on making political theatre accessible to young people and driven by feminist rage.

Producer and associate artist Finlay Carroll’s credits include founding the ecological musical theatre company Scatter and working alongside director Kerry Kyriacos Michael MBE. Carroll joins this project off the back of producing Adventures of Straker (★★★★★ Edinburgh Music Review) in 2022.

Creative Producer Susannah Bramwell’s recent work includes the Offie-nominated CONFINEMENT, a costume-led site-specific piece exploring motherhood in the pandemic. Her work champions accessibility, collaboration and research.

Booking opens at 12pm on Friday 13th January for LAVENDER’s sharing on Wednesday 8th February 2023 at the Wardrobe Theatre in Bristol.
