This keeps happening, particularly with cartilage piercings.

Clients are being sold “18k gold plated” jewellery thinking they’re investing in solid gold, when in reality the jewellery underneath is often silver or base metal with a thin gold coating over the top.

Over time that plating can wear away, exposing the metal underneath, which can then oxidise and discolour. That’s why we’re seeing blackened jewellery, irritated piercings, and people confused about why their “gold” jewellery suddenly doesn’t look gold anymore.

“18k gold plated” and “18k gold” are not interchangeable terms.

Solid gold means the jewellery itself is gold.
Gold plated means something else has been coated in gold.

Price tags do not automatically tell you which one you’re buying.

For this reason, we do not use or sell plated jewellery for piercings.

We only use gold, anodised implant grade titanium, and niobium.
