The Inspiration: Dalí famously claimed he was inspired to paint the soft watches after watching Camembert cheese melt in the sun following a meal.Symbolism: The “soft watches” mock the rigidity of linear, chronological time. Some art historians also interpret them as a surreal reflection of Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.Decay: One of the watches is swarming with ants, which serve as a recurring motif in Dalí’s work representing decay and mortality.
