Introducing our artists: Ann Sheppard

“I am a 60 year old painter based in Hexham, currently playing with abstracted landscapes in acrylic and mixed media. I’m very interested in archaeology and human interaction with landscapes throughout history - particularly ancient landmarks and earthworks.”

Ann’s work is on display at The Threshing Barn as part of our main exhibition ‘Underfoot/Overhead’. The full programme is now live, so you can browse locations, events and participating artists, and plan your visit! We’re open Friday-Sunday 12-4.

Introducing our artists: Marie Wright Marie Wright

“My work is inspired by the hidden aspects of the landscape revealed through exploring and observing both its fragility and its changing nature. I walk daily within my surroundings close to Morecambe Bay, collecting washed up rope, wood and rare finds of fabric and leather. The hand-made paper pieces, made from plants in the locality, are created from these finds and are a memory of the patterns, texture and traces left behind that reflect the frail nature of that landscape and the marks left by man.“

Marie has three works including ‘Fragments I’ (pictured) on display at the Field Shelter as part of our main exhibition ‘Underfoot/Overhead’. Introducing our artists: Sophie Bryant

“After hopping around various parts of the UK I returned to Cumbria and am currently based in Carlisle. I have a background in illustration but work across a range of mediums, including drawing, printmaking, painting and the occasional creation of a creature from fabric scraps or wool. Having always been drawn to natural history and liminal spaces, my work often explores how nature exists in the subconscious. I’m interested in the juxtaposition of different elements and like to use texture and negative space to explore this.”

Three artworks by Sophie including ‘My Familiar’s Name is Josephine’ (pictured) are on display at The Threshing Barn (Green Croft Arts) as part of our main exhibition ‘Underfoot/Overhead’. Introducing our artists: Merlin Cross Merlin

Merlin Cross is a painter and ceramicist working between Newcastle Upon Tyne and Tonbridge, Kent. He makes work that tries to capture fleeting moments and memories, and looks for ways to document what something might feel like more than what it might have looked like. He’s constantly thinking about the “pictures or it didn’t happen” mindset, and the fear that he’s not living his life to the fullest. In an age increasingly dominated by the digital, Merlin’s practice is rooted in the physical, and seeks to celebrate real, tactile experience.

Merlin’s work ‘Empty Nest’ (pictured) and ceramic work ‘Snail Shrine’ are on display at the Field Shelter as part of our main exhibition ‘Underfoot/Overhead’. Introducing our artists: Vicki Painting

“I am an artist researcher working mainly with photography and video. I am currently researching a family archive, part of which consists of 2 landscape paintings by a prisoner of war held at Featherstone Park POW camp. The concept of place making during incarceration through creativity is prescient in my research and I am responding to these works by walking the routes he may have taken in the vicinity. Through my own interpretation, I examine the complexities of how, in painting the English countryside, this POW could remain an agentic individual through a representation of the landscape of his captivity.”

Two of Vicki’s photographic prints will be on display as part of our main exhibitions at the Threshing Barn and the Field Shelter.

Introducing our artists: Nataliia Petryk Natalia Petrik

Nataliia Petryk is a Ukrainian visual artist, psychologist and performer based in the UK. Her practice moves between individual, reflective processes in painting and socially engaged work, where interaction and shared experience become central. She explores perception, lived experience and the relationship between inner awareness and collective processes, working across both solitary visual exploration and participatory artistic formats.

Introducing our artists: Joe Richardson Joe Richardson

Joe Richardson is a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in London. His practice constantly moves between three areas: making, teaching and walking.
Each method of working contains many different strands but at the heart of everything lies an interest in the in-between. Joe is fascinated by the intervals and spaces between these activities, the gaps between places, roles, one version of the self and another. Joe’s work explores how we move through the world and the embodied processes present in the transitions we so often rush through.

His image ‘Field Shelter’ is a photographic exposure made during his residency at the Field Shelter earlier this year, using a self-built pinhole camera made from a wh***ey barrel.

It will be on display as part of our main exhibitions at the Threshing Barn and the Field Shelter. The full programme will be live soon so keep an eye out for more announcements!

Introducing our artists: Bill Reed

“I am an artist living and working in Carlisle. I paint expressionist and abstract works based on landscape. In particular, I respond to the open landscapes of the Solway Firth and the rugged country of Northern England. I use intuitive layering and expressive mark-making to interpret the energy, rhythms and history of this beautiful part of the world. My intention is to convey the joy I feel being out in this living, breathing landscape, responding to the light, the textures, the sounds, the sea, the wind, the stones, the mudflats, the buildings and the pathways.”

Five of Bill’s works including “Walltown Quarry” (pictured) will be on display as part of our main exhibitions at the Threshing Barn and the Field Shelter. The full programme will be live soon so keep an eye out for more announcements!

Such a treat to witness Katie’s banner ceremony yesterday evening, as the day’s rain gave way to a fresh and clear evening.

Artist Katie Lock Katie Lock has been in residence at the field shelter this week, working on a piece inspired by the stories of Haltwhistle, and all its intertwined energies of nature and industry.

The banner piece and pennant flags made by community members were processed down the Burn, Katie leading with spoken poetry, declarations and grounding moments.

The work will now form a stop on the Hadrian’s Wall Art Trail, gracing the window of the Haltwhistle Film Project in the Market Square. You’ll be able to see Katie’s design in all its glory as well as the poems she penned which activated the work in the landscape.
