Northern Broadsides Theatre Company

Northern Broadsides Theatre Company www.northern-broadsides.co.uk Touring theatre company based in Halifax, UK. Our celebration of the diversity of the Northern voice makes us stand apart.
(252)

Celebrating the multiplicity of Northern voices through Shakespeare, classics & new writing. We make bold, radical and accessible productions of classic and new plays that both reflect the diversity and multiplicity of voices in the north, and act as a catalyst for change throughout the region. We place participation and artist development at our heart to make the work accessible to a broader demo

graphic and nurture a greater diversity of voices on our stages. Each of our productions is made with a ‘creation squad’; a community to whom the piece is relevant to; but also people who would not usually engage in creating theatre. Quality Street is the beginning of a commitment to co-creating all of our work with local communities. This new model will transform the stories we tell together, re-invent how we make popular productions of classic plays and discover a new generation of northern artists. We also adapt our work to any space on the venues we visit, both traditional theatres and non-velvet spaces. Our bold, accessible, unpretentious productions that have been playing to packed housed across the country (and internationally!) for 27 years give us a strong identity which has allowed us to form an unbreakable bond with our audiences. The Northern Voice is not a singular dialect or accent. The classics don’t belong to any one region, or voice – they’re part of our common culture. Using regional voices, in all of their forms, makes our performances engaging and immediate, allowing audiences to hear and appreciate the words like never before. Our work brings words to life by celebrating the poetry of language and creates a rapport between actor and audience. The texts have a timeless resonance, no matter when they were first written.

Today is Kassie Jones' final day at Northern Broadsides in her role as Production and Administration Assistant 🥺

BUT all is not lost! We're delighted that Kassie will be continuing to work with Park Youth Theatre as Youth Theatre Assistant and Producer.

We’re so grateful for everything Kassie has brought to the company during her time with us. She really has done it all – from managing minibus travel at a nature reserve, to puppeteering in front of 1,400 people on the grounds of Eureka; from dishing up a communal meal on a rainy night in Halifax, to taking 13 young people on their very first theatre trip… she’s an absolute STAR! ⭐

We’re going to miss having her around, but we’re so pleased she’ll still be part of the Broadsides family through Park Youth Theatre.

We stand in solidarity with Calderdale Valley of Sanctuary following this deeply disappointing decision.

Through our work with St. Augustine's Centre Halifax on The Writer’s Refuge writing and poetry sessions, we’ve seen first-hand the creativity and stories that people seeking sanctuary bring to our community, and the importance of offering a warm welcome.

Our Commitment Remains Unchanged!

Yesterday, Calderdale Council voted to withdraw from the Local Authority of Sanctuary scheme. While we are disappointed by this decision, it does not define Calderdale, nor change who we are or what we stand for.

For us, Sanctuary is not a title or a badge. It is a shared commitment and a promise. It is the everyday acts of welcome shown by our members, volunteers, schools, faith communities, businesses, charities, public services and neighbours who choose kindness every day.

We are proud as part of City of Sanctuary movement. As an independent charity, we will continue working with our partners across Calderdale to build bridges, strengthen communities and ensure that people seeking sanctuary feel welcomed and valued.

We would also like to thank everyone who contacted their local councillors, and the councillors who spoke up and voted against the Motion. Your support means so much to us.

Our commitment remains unchanged. We will continue to:

Welcome with compassion
Celebrate the contribution of people seeking sanctuary
Grow the Sanctuary movement
Equip and inspire others

Supporting people who need our help is the right thing to do. ⁣It should be something we’re proud of. Together, we can continue to show that the true spirit of Calderdale is one of kindness, compassion and welcome ❤️

We've received some fantastic reflections from the younger members of Park Youth Theatre at the end of their latest term:

"Before I started I wasn't as brave, but now I talk more and are more comfortable with the people around me"

"I feel confident here because I now don't have stage fright"

"It helps us to perform in front of anyone"

"It helps us to work as a team"

"I express my emotions by doing what I love"

Watching young people grow in confidence and find their voice is what it's all about. We're incredibly proud of them all.

Park Youth Theatre enjoyed a wonderful Bollywood workshop! 💃

We were joined by British Youth Music Theatre to learn more about Bollywood Rose, a new musical, and take part in a workshop led by brilliant choreographer, Ash Mukherjee.

Participants from both age groups learned material from the musical and developed their skills in acting, singing and dancing.

One participant said:
“I loved playing different characters and learning the moves!”

New here? Hello! We’re Northern Broadsides 👋

We’re a theatre company from Halifax, West Yorkshire, making bold, exciting shows that celebrate Northern stories and voices. We care about making classic texts accessible to everyone - sometimes that’s as simple as hearing a play in your own accent for the first time, or seeing yourself represented on stage.

We're passionate about making theatre open and welcoming to all. We support young creatives through our playwriting programme Life in a Northern Town, run Park Youth Theatre in Halifax, and create spaces for people to share their stories through poetry and writing projects like The Writer’s Refuge.

We’re all about great stories, new voices and bringing people together through theatre 💙
