Bussing Out Family Day
Monday 16 February, 2026 , 10am–2pm

Join us for a special Family Day — a playful, creative space for families to explore together.

Bussing Out is an immersive art installation set in the top deck of a 70s bus. The project produced by Bradford's Theatre In The Mill, brings to life memories of those affected by 'bussing out'- the goverment policy between 1965-1980 where schools were required to have no more than 30% of their children from imigrant famillies - meaning some children were bussed daily to other schools.

Proud to announce IOU50 - a two-year programme celebrating IOU’s pioneering legacy in experimental art and performance and a springboard for the future of the IOU Creation Centre, a place where artists collaborate, experiment and present new work.

At the heart of the programme is the creation of the IOU Archive: a new physical and digital resource bringing together materials, props, films and images that document the origins and evolution of IOU and its founding artists.

Over the next two years, IOU Labs will commission contemporary artists to respond to the archive, using it as a catalyst to generate ambitious new work across multiple disciplines, spanning art, performance, engineering, technology and environment.

The archive will function as a living space for past, present and future productions, activating stories and memories from artists and audiences through workshops that capture the lived experiences of those connected to IOU.

The programme culminates in a major exhibition that brings together archives, new commissions and contemporary practice, celebrating IOU’s legacy while confirming what comes next.

Bussing Out is an immersive art installation set in the top deck of a 70s bus, produced by University of Bradford-based arts organisation, Theatre in the Mill, written and directed by Artistic Director Dr Shabina Aslam

Taking place between 1965 and 1980, ‘bussing out’ was an educational policy, that stated no school should have more than 30 per cent immigrants on roll, or they had to be taken to other schools.

The project brings to life memories of those affected by bussing out via a bus journey through Bradford, alongside animation and black and white photographs, shown through the windows of the bus, during an 18-minute art installation also featuring audio of young passengers talking on the last day of school.

Suitable for ages 8 +, Bussing Out is available for group bookings between 3-13 Feb - please email [email protected] to arrange a group visit
