Artist Spotlight - Beyond Borders💡💫

Shirley Archibald

Shirley's work examines the persecution of witches, the creation of the hag myth - crone, outsider - as a site of resistance and reclamation. She explores how place holds memory and how contemporary practice can respond to histories of erasure, persecution & silence.

Her striking works are created using mixed media and materials including vintage sewing patterns, earth, paint and latex.

1. He Appeared to her in the Likeness of a Black Dog Before Supper - Mixed media, canvas, earth, vintage sewing patterns, acrylic paint.

2. They say She was a w***e and a witch 2026 - Pump, coathanger, packing paper, latex embedded with sewing patterns, earth.

3. In League With the Powers of Darkness - Mixed media, canvas, vintage sewing patterns, earth, acrylic paint.

4. The Devil Himself Summoned her to that Meeting on the Glebe - Broomstick, coat hanger, latex, vintage sewing patterns and earth 2025.

Louise Gorst - Mindfully Creative
Poetry in Motion and Seated Poetry in Motion

Louise states that "while some of the work is set within a frame - a border - the process is playful and experimental, stretching the boundaries of conventional objective drawing.

I love drawing the (human) form in movement, capturing gestures and moments caught in time, combining marks of movement with drawings of the form, emulating the dancer's kinesphere as she moves through space, combining calligraphic marks, traces of movement and forms as well as a sense of the energy of the space the dancer is moving through. Embodied drawing is pure physical, playful experimentation combining materials and movement, beyond the border of the body and the possibilities of the materials."

Heloise Jackson:
'We shall fight them from the comfort of Whitehall'

Heloise's mixed media piece is rendered through a combination of collage, monotype, paint, ink, charcoal and graphite. The work was constructed by assembling materials for both visual and structural reasons, growing, changing and taking on a new life with each layer and addition rather than starting with a fixed-size substrate.

The materiality, raw edges and fragile nature are atypical in painting and are an inherent part of the concept.

Claire Tupman

Microphotographs printed on aluminium sheeting

Based in Melbourne, Derby, Claire’s photography has evolved from traditional digital photography to a unique style of microphotography where she creates abstract, fine art pieces from the crystallisation of everyday substances.

With a background in applied biology, Claire mixes and dries solutions on glass slides, which are then viewed under the microscope at x 40 magnification.
Polarisers are then applied between the slide and the microscope to create the colours you see. Until that point, Claire has no idea if she will find a usable image and what it will look like.

Of her work Claire says:

"Each of the images in this exhibition depends on the orientation of polarisers, the different substances used and how the slide is dried. It blurs the lines between science and art, resulting in a unique type of image developed through experimentation and exploration."

View Claire's striking artworks until 4th July.
All three pieces are for sale - please contact [email protected] for further details and for sale enquiries.

April Thompson Yasamee

Abaca/Kozo Landscape installation

Mixed media Abaca(banana fibre) & Kozo(mulberry bark fibre) paper, clay, wire, MDF

April's mixed media Abaca/Kozo Landscape, explores process, play and medium by extending the intrinsic qualities of handmade paper sheets from 2D into 3D sculptural forms.

Her installation resembles a stage set, where the objects act as dynamic elements in a dramatic landscape. Abaca/Kozo Landscape combines small surrealist free-standing sculptures with other natural sculptural items such as sea shells, chalk pebbles, driftwood sculpted by the sea and natural elements.

Beyond their own borders, these natural fibre objects hold their own narratives and histories though their origins - paper making with Kozo fibre and Abaca fibre involves the slow and accurate process of paper making. These mixed media sculptures grapple with sculptural principles of volume, balance, tension, space. By placing them in an installation April has allowed for a dialogue of tension and imbalance between the pieces.

Explore April's landscape until the 4th July and enjoy our full exhibition from Tuesday to Saturday every week.
