The Eternal Renewal
Cyanotype, Candlestick, Tin Can

Louise’s zoetrope explores rhythm, repetition and change. A water lily from her own garden opens and closes in an endless cycle, drawing attention to the quiet daily rhythms of the natural world and the passing of time.

Through the voices of each of Woolf’s characters, the work explores the idea that we are “not one and simple but complex and many”, recognising how the uncontrollable peaks and troughs of our lives render identity fluid and ever changing. Drawing on the novel’s attentive observations of the everyday, the series echoes the Nicola’s belief in photography as an act of noticing: a way of recognising how small moments of joy, as much as life’s larger obstacles, shape who we are.

What Remains
Altered Book, Found Textiles, Sea Water, Glitter, Plant Material,      Thread.
2026
Price: free!

Sally’s work explores individual voices and shifting identities within the books six characters. Each form reflects their separate experiences and personalities, distinct yet connected - different rhythms of the same sea. All elements are made from a single copy of The Waves, transforming the book itself, into a shared physical landscape.

Visitors are invited to take a fragment from the work with them, as pieces leave the installation, spaces and absences emerge allowing the work to be in a state of continual transformation. What remains is not fixed, with each fragment carrying something of the whole away beyond the gallery. Reminding us of Woolf’s idea that the self is never fixed — it is always shifting, being removed, and being remade.

Virginia Woolf
Redacted Altered Book
2026

The characters Bernard and Louis are always trying to fix in words various sensations and experiences in the hope that by doing so they will infuse transcendental moments with permanence. Throughout his life Bernard collects words in a note book in the quest to find the perfect phrase that encapsulates life’s meaning. Ultimately he comes to realise ordered sequences and neat phrases reveal very little of lived experience. He comes to realise words cannot be ordered in any coherent way to capture the true depth and complexity of lived experience but are instead mere shadows.

In keeping with Bernard’s quest to find the perfect phrase, Chris has redacted Woolf’s text creating phrases that ‘surface and float’ above a ‘sea of words’. This work uses every page from The Waves, transforming it into a notebook of phrases. Each page remains unbound allowing the altered book to be read in various sequences.
