Artists’ retreat idea for July: combine a couple of creative days at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village with a peaceful stay at Puttenham Barn Bunkhouse. 🎨🏡

Throughout July, Watts Gallery has a rich programme of exhibitions, talks and hands-on creative events ✨ — from The Art of Wallpaper: Morris & Co. and Women of ‘Our Time’ to curator tours, plein air painting, block printing and botanical drawing 🖌️🌸.

Make it a mini retreat with us! 🌿 Arrive car-free 🚌, soak up the art 🎨, then follow the signposted North Downs Way towards Puttenham for a beautiful 1¾-mile walk to the Barn 🥾.

Getting here the greener way: take the Stagecoach 46 bus 🚌 from Guildford, Farnham, Farncombe or Godalming and alight at Watts Gallery, Compton — the stop is right outside the Gallery 📍. This route is ideal if you live in Farnham, Godalming or Guildford and fancy a great-value minibreak 💚 without the long-haul journey.

🎟️: Watts Gallery offers a car-free discount for visitors arriving by bus, train, bike or on foot, and Puttenham Barn Bunkhouse also offers a Green Discount for guests arriving on foot, by bicycle or by public transport 🌍

Using the 46 also helps show demand for this much-loved local service 🙌 — including the campaign to extend it to Sundays — while turning the journey itself into part of the inspiration: Surrey Hills views 🌄, village lanes, art, walking and a warm welcome at the Barn 🏡.

Why go car-free? 🌿

• Lower your carbon footprint while enjoying the Surrey Hills scenery along the way 🌳
• Save money with great-value bus travel and Green Discounts at both Watts Gallery and the Barn 🎟️
• Turn the journey into part of the retreat, with time to look, sketch, read or simply unwind 🚌
• Support local bus services — every extra journey helps show demand for routes like the 46, including the campaign for a Sunday service 🙌
• Arrive refreshed, inspired and ready for art, walking and a peaceful night away 🎨

And don’t forget: you may qualify for free local bus travel through the national concessionary travel scheme, while government fare support has also helped keep many single bus journeys more affordable. Check your eligibility and fare before you travel. 🚌✨

Plan your July artists’ escape: bus to Watts Gallery, explore the exhibitions, walk the North Downs Way to Puttenham, and settle in for a simple, sustainable creative retreat at the Barn. 🎨🌿🚌

💪🩹Meet John — our very own Man of Steel 💪🩹

🗽American walker John Steel stayed with us after an unfortunate accident on his pilgrimage to Canterbury.

🏥While making his way to the barn, he stepped off the road for an oncoming car, slipped, and broke his wrist. Warden Rosie took him to hospital, and although his arm is now in plaster, it still needs pinning — so John had to cut his trip short and head back to the USA earlier than planned.

🌳John returned to the barn to recover before travelling home, he’ll be back once everything has healed to complete his pilgrimage.

😍Despite the setback, John shared how much he appreciated the care that goes into the barn — from the dedication of our volunteers to its eco-friendly ethos.

💚🌿We’ll be cheering him on until he’s ready to return 💚🌿

And we'd love to welcome you too - book your break with us today!

📚Student Pilgrims, we’ve got you 🥾️

Lovely Laura checked in for a night at Puttenham Barn Bunkhouse on her first time walking the Pilgrims’ Way, after coming up from Southampton, where she’s a university student.

☔️💦A spell of rainy weather meant it was time to pause the trail — but not before enjoying a hot shower and a chance to dry out properly.

🌲We’ll be ready to welcome her back when she returns to pick up where she left off 🌲

👛We can't think of a better, affordable adventure for students this summer - pick up the pilgrims way with your study buddies and enjoy a stay with us on the way.

So much of what makes Puttenham Barn Bunkhouse feel special comes from people who quietly give their time and care. 🫶

Here are Martin and Dave, they've been hard at work behind the scenes, reinstalling the sheet roof in the wardens’ office to help keep it warmer and more comfortable — joined by a “wounded pilgrim” walker who was there to witness the effort! 🔨🏡

Visitors often notice the atmosphere of the barn: that it feels cared for, looked after, and full of thoughtfulness. That doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from volunteers, wardens, and supporters who put their hands, time and hearts into this place. 💚

From practical jobs to the little eco touches that make the barn feel both simple and special, every act of care matters. Every repair, improvement and thoughtful detail helps make Puttenham Barn Bunkhouse the warm welcome that so many guests need. 🌍🌿

We’re so grateful for the people who keep this place going — often quietly, always generously. ✨
