JOY by name, and joy by nature 💛

over the past few months, we’ve been working in collaboration with the gorgeous Hubbub Theatre & SO Festival on a co-creation project with the wonderful folks at Skegness Day Services. it’s been one of our favourite bits of work to date, surrounded by a proper dream team.

today was the first performance of JOY, as part of the SO festival programme. a celebration of the Day Service, the magic that happens every day in their space, the community and staff, the ordinary and the extraordinary things that bring us joy.

you have one more chance to catch JOY tomorrow at 3PM in Skeg Tower Gardens Pavillion, as well as lots of other amazing performances and exhibits as part of SO fest. we would really, really love to see you there 💛

p.s we were busy rehearsing for the show so sadly missed the King in GY…buuuut we managed to catch him in skeggy instead 🫡✨

The Lady Who Came From The Sun 💛

last year, we were so fortunate to receive support from the incredible for an R&D project in partnership with wonderful local author Katie Hopper, to begin adapting one of her books into a family theatre piece.

Katie is a massive inspiration to us; her way of translating the big life stuff into children’s stories is a real gift to both young people and adults alike.

The Lady Who Came From The Sun was Katie’s first book, starting as her own way of navigating the big life stuff and becoming the first of many beautiful stories for children far + wide. illustrated by her daughter, the book explores grief in a gentle, celebratory way. it’s precious. when we first got the team together for a read through, many (happy) tears were shed 🫂

for the people we love and the people we’ve lost, we keep the light shining 💛 over the coming months, we’ll be continuing to translate this story into a theatre piece for local families. stay tuned! in the meantime, please check out Katie’s work >

had to get a piccy under the big sun before it goes! thanks for havin’ us 🌞🌞🌞

lowercase trivia: we (matt & lis) had been working together since 2018, with our biggest project being touring schools workshops with Grimsby Jazz Projects.

we travelled across NE lincolnshire, delivering music and theatre sessions ahead of the NEL Music Hub singing festival. playing cosmo and carrie - the very best of friends who loved adventures, silliness, and looking after the world around them.

lockdown cut this work short, so we made a DIY digital project for children and families in the midst of all the *big world stuff*.

we were gutted to stop this work, but the pause gave us time to take a breath and think about what came next. and that next step was lowercase ! 😌

(we still occasionally throw on some dungarees and go on cosmo and carrie adventures though)

Our brilliant Paul ready to weave some tales next Friday as part of First Draft, it’s gonna be great 📖✨

Our final announcement post ahead of lowercase theatre's First Draft scratch night event 🥁

Many of our Open Mic night attendees may recognise Paul...

Paul grew up in Ulceby and has been writing poetry since he was a schoolboy, though it’s only since late 2018 that he has been regularly performing at spoken word Open Mic nights on both sides of the Humber. Paul’s love of the natural world, art, theatre, history and politics often intertwine to inspire his poetry, and the work he plans to share as part of the First Draft scratch night, is a perfect example of this.

Paul’s short story, The New Sun Inn, has a deliberately timeless feel in order to immerse his audience in the events of its “cold dank December night”. Shut out the howling winds and driving rain, and listen as our narrator weaves a warming tale whilst waiting for the storm to pass.

First Draft scratch night is now fully booked.

Well done to everyone who has been shortlisted to perform.

CREATIVE FRIENDS !! ✨

a lovely opportunity from Franklin Sixth Form College, to be a part of their annual Creative Conference. last year’s event was such a fantastic showcase of regional creativity, both students and workshop facilitators had a super positive experience.

we also REALLY appreciate Franklin’s transparency + commitment to paying artists for their time, working towards finding additional funding that fully covers costs. ty Franklin 😌👏🏼

p.s you need any support ahead of next Friday to get an EOI in, do just pop us a message and we’ll help in any way we can x
