Factory International

Factory International Inventing tomorrow together. New art & music – at Aviva Studios, online, across the world & at MIF.

Factory International presents new art and music – at Aviva Studios, online, across Manchester, around the world and at MIF. Drawing on Manchester International Festival's track record for premiering bold productions that defy convention, artists will be encouraged to create work in new ways, to collaborate across disciplines and blur the boundaries between art and popular culture. Built with flex

ibility in mind, the design of Factory International's home, Aviva Studios, is led by Ellen van Loon of the world-leading practice Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). The 13,350 square-metre venue is based around large, open, ultra-flexible spaces that can be constantly reconfigured, enabling large-scale artistic work of invention and ambition that isn’t possible anywhere else in the world. The organisation will continue to stage MIF every other year, at Aviva Studios and other venues and spaces across Greater Manchester. Building on the festival's record of working with communities, as audiences and as participants, Factory International will be a space where local people are actively involved – from participating in flagship commissions, co-designing programmes of activity, to shaping the organisation through involvement in its public forums. Through the Factory Academy, it will also become a major training centre for local people, equipping them with the skills needed for careers in the creative industries and helping to build the technicians, producers and other creative talent that will bring the future alive.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of David Hockney, one of the most influential and defining contemporary artists of the 20th century.

The Yorkshire-born painter’s seven-decade career was characterised not only by his groundbreaking paintings, but also by his pioneering multimedia approach to image-making.

He will be remembered as one of the most significant British artists of our time.

We are grateful to have had the opportunity to showcase his work at Aviva Studios through Lightroom and Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away) in 2024 and 2025.

His work will continue to inspire audiences and artists for generations to come.

The Wang Family Ancestral Hall is under construction in the Warehouse for Ai Weiwei's Button Up! 🚧

Part of Ai Weiwei's next major exhibition, the Wang Family Ancestral Hall is a reconstructed Ming dynasty ancestral temple from Jiangxi province in China.

Built from over 1,300 wooden components, the temple uses traditional post-and-beam joinery techniques that require no nails, allowing it to be dismantled and rebuilt.

The monumental installation of Button Up! brings together new and existing large-scale works exploring the complex history between China and the UK, empire, power and trade.

"I'm into finally bringing 'Hamlet Hail to the Thief' to London, and to the Barbican of all places! It is fascinating and very strange to me how this came to life and how it has worked.

When it revealed itself to us over time I was shocked, having never had this kind of experience before. I am happy for it to be seen by a wider audience in such an intense space."

- Thom

Hamlet Hail to the Thief will have its London premiere at the Barbican Centre this autumn, running from 31st October 2026 through to 23rd January 2027, following sold-out runs last year at the Royal Shakespeare Company and Aviva Studios, home of Factory International.

W.A.S.T.E. subscribers automatically get pre-sale access from 10am BST on Thursday 25th June. More info at https://waste.lnk.to/hhttt2FA. General sale is at 10am BST on Friday 26th June.

Co-created by directors Christine Jones and Steven Hoggett, Thom deconstructed and remoulded Hail to the Thief into a score to serve the play, performed live by a cast of musicians and actors.

Hyperpop star underscores brings the GALLERIA tour to Aviva Studios 🎶

Celebrating her acclaimed third album U, the album marks the arrival of a new creative era: focused, emotionally charged and sharply defined.

U is rooted in transience and the bustling sounds of shopping malls, airports, hotels, with each song written in hotel rooms, studios, airplanes and vehicles around the world.

Hailing from San Francisco, Filipino-American artist April Harper Grey started making music as underscores in school and, since then, has garnered over 150 million global streams and continued releasing adventurous, genre-defying music.

With support from umru.

Please note: This is a venue upgrade from Gorilla. All original tickets remain valid and will scan on the door.

🎟️ General tickets are now on sale.

"She taught me that women can be strong - and just be bold. That's what Sinéad O'Connor means to me."

In the run-up to The Surge: An Ode to Sinéad O'Connor, we spoke with Manchester poet Loll the Poet on the impact Sinéad O'Connor has had on her work as an artist.

Throughout her career, O'Connor challenged authority and refused to fit expectations - including a defining moment of her career when she ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II saying "fight the real enemy" live on Saturday Night Live in 1992.

Definitive moments like this in Sinéad's career have influenced and inspired the work of Loll the Poet.

Sinéad's voice and life will be celebrated through The Surge: An Ode to Sinéad O'Connor - a new dance work directed by the Tony Award-winning choreographer and director Sonya Tayeh and co-produced with The Joyce Theater.

Read the second work in our new Editor in Residence series, from author and writer Róisín Lanigan ✍️

The Irish have a long and storied history of migrating to England.

But what is it like to move to Britain as it enters the twilight of its own glory days?

Róisín Lanigan interrogates the politics of living in what was once the headquarters of the empire with An outsider among the British: part one.

As our latest Editor in Residence, Zing Tsjeng's takeover draws on the unexpected confluences, associations and solidarities between the East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) and Irish diaspora living in the shadow of the British Empire in response to our summer programme with Ai Weiwei and Sinéad O'Connor.

Last year, Ai Weiwei spoke with us for our Artists in Times of Upheaval talk series 💬

The world-leading artist reflected on his role as a global citizen, artist and thinker.

He also discussed the moment in 1995 where he smashed a 2000-year-old ceremonial urn in Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn (1995) - questioning the value of cultural objects and rejecting the idea of 'retinal art' (art that pleases the eye).

Ai Weiwei returns to the Hall this July for an exclusive conversation on Button Up! – the landmark exhibition coming to Manchester - as well as the artist reflecting on a remarkable life and career.

Ai Weiwei: Button Up! is a monumental exhibition confronting 200 years of power, trade, war, culture and Empire that have shaped Sino-British relations.

Join us in the Hall to celebrate the life and work of one of the most influential artists of our time in this exclusive artist talk.
