Rita Marcalo’s classes are challenging and encourage dancers to work against common learned dance movement patterns. The class reflects the training background and the personal movement style of the artist, placing an emphasis on co-ordination, risk-taking, and non-linear movement.

- I guess if the stage exploded...

Performance maker Sylvia Rimat follows the aspirational and possibly impossible goal of presenting a show never to be forgotten by its audience members – not a single one. By introducing memory tasks and techniques and applying them to the stage situation, the audience is systematically trained to remember – hopefully forever.

- Clothe/Unclothe on Tour

Clothe/Unclothe presents 12 dancers exploring the relationship between costume and physicality. The work takes the spectator on a relentless repetitive structure, and invites audiences to enjoy the pleasures of difference in sameness. It also plays with notions of spectatorship, at times restricting the audience’s visual access to the work.

Performance Year Zero: A Living History
Tate Modern, The Tanks
Friday 5 and Saturday 6 October 2012
£20, concessions available

Performance Year Zero: A Living History challenges the statement of leading American feminist scholar Peggy Phelan that ‘performance is the art of the present tense’ by considering how the museum might tell the story of performance art’s extensive history. An inherent problem in such a re-telling is the medium’s inevitable move from live event into secondary documentation.

There will be performances of key works by artists whose own practices carry such history within them as live quotation, repetition or re-make. The symposium will explore how these histories of action- and event-based works have created a new vocabulary that has been passed on through generations of artists with talks, discussion, screening and performance.

Friday 5 October includes contributions from Barbara Clausen, Rike Frank, RoseLee Goldberg, Irwin, Franck Leibovici, Rabih Mroue and Kathy Noble.

Saturday 6 October includes contributions from Guillaume Désanges, David Graeber, Martin Hargreaves, Joachim Koester, Otobong Nkanga, Yvonne Rainer, Jalal Toufic and Catherine Wood.
