As part of Who Do You Think I Am?’s ongoing exploration of identity, immigration and belonging, we took to the streets to speak to the general public.
This time we delved deeper into belonging.
Many of the responses centred around two things: people and place.
For some, belonging was found in family, friends and community - the people who make them feel understood without explanation. For others, it was connected to a particular city, neighbourhood or country; somewhere that felt familiar, safe and comforting.
What stood out was that belonging wasn’t always tied to where someone was born. It was often shaped by experiences, relationships and the spaces where people felt able to be themselves.
While identity tells a story about who we are, belonging reveals something different: our need for connection.
And perhaps that’s what makes belonging so powerful. It’s less about where you come from, and more about where you feel at home.
