Exhibition and event with .gloucester An important opportunity to experience work in progress on a very special project …

Join us for a conversation about an initiative inspired by a ‘slave song’ held in Gloucester archives - Beating Back the Past, led by artists Rider Shafique and Vanley Burke.

We’ll see a film trailer from Barbados and have a Q&A discussion with the artists that we hope will inform the steps taken from here to unfold the stories that should be told.

The full project will be displayed in Gloucester Cathedral in September as part of the 2024 Threads project exhibition.

Invitation for our big event tonight with Sew Jamaica and their opening night tonight highlighting their amazing beautiful story which began with a collective project and partnership between a new group of textile artists based at All Nations and Church of God of Prophecy, GlosJamJamaica and the newly opened Picturedrome. The collaboration saw 60 flags (pictured) in Jamaican colours displayed for the sixtieth year Jamaican independence celebrations in Gloucester Park and the birth of Sew Jamaica. They have gone from strength to strength and meet regularly at the Picturedrome each Thursday for collective projects. A big success story for Tredworth and Barton communities, come and enjoy celebrations with them ❤️

This is an incredible show that needs to be experienced close up, one that should not be missed with Vanley Burke and Rider Shafique. Some of the working process and preparation took place at the Picturedrome and so feel lucky to have an insight to how this remarkable project evolved.gloucester You have until 30th September to see Beating Back the Past at Gloucester Cathedral. An extraordinary exhibition that considers the ongoing impact of the Transatlantic Slave Trade on the descendants of enslaved people.

Beating Back the Past features the powerful work of artists Vanley Burke and Rider Shafique. All exhibits are free to visit. Check the Cathedral website for opening times.

Using rarely-seen archival footage from nine different countries, the film melds intimate interviews and eloquent public speeches with cinéma vérité glimpses of Baldwin and original scenes from his extraordinary funeral service in December 1987.
