DOES HiFi ACTUALLY SOUND BETTER TODAY THAN IT DID 20 YEARS AGO?

We have better DACs. Better streaming. Better measurements. Better materials. More processing power.

But does that automatically mean better music in the living room?

Or have some of the great amplifiers, turntables and loudspeakers of the past still got something today's equipment hasn't improved upon?

If we put a great £5,000 system from 2006 against a great £5,000 system from 2026 (price adjusted !), which one are you taking home?

We're interested to hear this one from those of you who've lived with both generations of equipment.

Old school or modern HiFi? And why?

WHAT’S THE ONE PIECE OF HiFi YOU WISH YOU’D NEVER SOLD?

Come on, most of us who’ve been into HiFi long enough have one...

That amplifier you should have kept.

Those speakers you still think about.

That turntable you sold to fund an “upgrade” that turned out to be anything but.

Then six months later you realise just how good the old one actually was.

So, confession time...

What’s the ONE piece of HiFi you really regret selling?

Give us the make and model in the comments.

Bonus points if you’ve subsequently tried to track down another one!

We have a feeling this could bring back a few painful memories...

IMAGINE YOU'VE GOT £10,000 TO BUILD YOUR PERFECT HiFi SYSTEM FROM SCRATCH...

Sounds easy?

There's a catch. £10,000 is the lot.

You need:

Turntable OR streamer
Amplifier
Speakers
Cables

And every penny has to come out of that £10,000 budget.

So here's the question...

HOW ARE YOU SPLITTING THE MONEY?

Would you put the biggest chunk into the speakers?

Spend heavily on the source?

Go big on the amplifier?

And how much are you really leaving for cables?

Give us your split in the comments.

We'll go first !

Our spidey-sense tell us that a good representative split would :

Source: £2,000
Amplifier: £3,000
Speakers: £4,000
Cables: £1,000

TOTAL: £10,000
.....but there are a thousand reasons why you might have a completely different breakdown for a wildly different split !

We're genuinely interested to see how different everyone's answers are.

And because this is HiFi, we're absolutely certain everyone will respectfully agree with everyone else's choices...

Obviously.

Right, you've got £10k. How are YOU spending it?

HAS HI-FI BECOME TOO COMPLICATED?

Here's one for a Friday evening debate...

Once upon a time, you bought:

An amplifier.
A pair of speakers.
A record player.

Job done.

Today you can have a streamer, DAC, master clock, network switch, linear power supply, preamp, power amp, mains conditioner, fibre network connection and enough cables behind the rack to require planning permission.

And yet, something interesting is happening...

At the same time that high-end separates are becoming more sophisticated, we're seeing some genuinely impressive one-box amplifiers and active wireless loudspeakers.

Streaming. DAC. Amplification. Room correction. HDMI. Phono.

Sometimes all you need to add is two speakers.

In some systems, even the amplifier has disappeared inside the speakers.

So we're curious...

WHICH WAY WOULD YOU GO IF YOU WERE STARTING AGAIN TOMORROW?

A) Keep it simple. Streamer/amp + speakers.

B) Traditional separates. I want to choose every component.

C) Full active system. Two speakers and as few boxes as possible.

D) Absolutely ridiculous. Monoblocks, separate power supplies, clocks, network switches and cables everywhere.

And for those choosing D...

We already know you're going to need another hi-fi rack.

Tell us A, B, C or D in the comments and, more importantly, tell us WHY.

And if this gets you thinking about simplifying, rebuilding or completely overdoing your own system...

Talk to Audio Emotion.

Tell us what you've currently got and what you'd like to achieve. We can discuss upgrades, demonstrations and part exchange on your existing equipment.

WHAT IF A BLUETOOTH SPEAKER DIDN’T SOUND LIKE… A BLUETOOTH SPEAKER? 🎵

This is the DALI KATCH G2, and we think it might be one of those rare bits of hi-fi that almost everyone could find a use for.

Kitchen? Perfect.

Garden? Absolutely.

Bedroom? Yep.

Holiday cottage? Definitely.

Hotel room? Now we're talking.

And unlike the little plastic Bluetooth boxes we've all heard, the KATCH G2 comes from DALI, a company that actually knows a thing or two about building proper loudspeakers.

Inside its incredibly slim 47mm body are four active drive units, two passive radiators and 2 x 25 watts of amplification.

Then there's the rather ridiculous up to 30 HOURS of battery life.

That's enough for a very long party.

Or approximately three songs if someone gives control of Spotify to the person who keeps saying:

"Wait... you HAVE to hear this one."

You also get Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD, two selectable sound modes and, if one isn't enough, you can pair two KATCH G2s together for proper wireless stereo.

And it weighs just 1.1kg.

This isn't really a downsized hi-fi system.

It's simply a very good loudspeaker that happens to fit in your hand.

So here's today's question...

What if you also received a free pair of MOONDROP CHU II DSP In-Ear Monitors with your purchase ?

Well......you do !

GOT A STREAMER OR DIGITAL TRANSPORT? IT MIGHT BE TIME FOR A CHANGE... 🎵

Already using a Lumin, Auralic, Naim, Linn, Innuos, Aurender, Bluesound, Cambridge Audio or another digital source?

We want your trade-in.

The Eversolo T8 Streaming Transport has arrived at Audio Emotion, and it could be the perfect opportunity to upgrade your digital front end without changing the DAC you already love.

The T8 is a dedicated streaming transport. No internal DAC. Eversolo has concentrated its efforts on getting the cleanest possible digital signal out to your existing DAC.

And it's seriously well equipped:

🎵 Qobuz Connect
🎵 TIDAL Connect
🎵 Roon Ready
🎵 Spotify Connect
🎵 Ultra-precision femtosecond clock
🎵 Low-noise linear power supply
🎵 Isolated digital outputs
🎵 USB, IIS, AES/EBU, coaxial and optical
🎵 SFP fibre network capability
🎵 6-inch touchscreen

So here's our offer...

If you've already got a streamer or transport and fancy moving to the Eversolo T8, get in touch.

Tell us what you've got, its age and condition, and we'll give you a trade-in valuation against a new T8.

That old streamer sitting in your rack could be worth considerably more towards an upgrade than you think.

KEEP YOUR DAC.
TRADE YOUR STREAMER.
TRY THE T8. 🎵

WAIT... ITS OFFICIAL, CDs ARE COOL AGAIN?!

We need to talk about this.

For years, we've been told that physical music is yesterday's technology.

Vinyl came back.

Then cassettes somehow came back.

And now... CDs are making a comeback too.

A recent report in The Guardian says CD sales have risen 16% this year, while searches for CD players at John Lewis have jumped a staggering 96%. And interestingly, younger listeners are driving much of this renewed interest.

Why?

Maybe it's the fact that you actually own the music.

Maybe it's the artwork.

Maybe it's the ritual of choosing an album rather than allowing an algorithm to decide what you hear next.

Or perhaps younger music fans have simply discovered what those of us who bought CDs in the 80s and 90s already knew...

You can't accidentally drop a CD down the back of the sofa and then spend 20 minutes trying to find it on Spotify.

And there's something else happening here.

The modern hi-fi industry is giving physical music some seriously impressive hardware again. High-end CD players and transports are being developed alongside increasingly sophisticated streaming equipment. Even the humble silver disc is getting another moment in the spotlight.

So we're asking:

WHAT FORMAT DO YOU ACTUALLY LISTEN TO MOST?

🎵 Vinyl
💿 CD
📱 Streaming
🎧 Downloads
📼 Cassette
Or are you completely format agnostic?

And be honest...

Do you still have a box of CDs somewhere that you refuse to get rid of because “they might be worth something one day”?

We know you're out there.

Tell us what you're listening to. We want to know.

21/08/2026

What if your favourite records aren't actually as clean as you think they are?

That supposedly “mint” record you've owned for 20 years...

The one you've cleaned several times...

The one that still produces that familiar snap...crackle... pop... (and its past breakfast time !)

It might be time to go deeper.

Meet the Kirmuss KA-RC-1 Ultrasonic Record Restoration System.

This isn't simply about giving your records a wash. Kirmuss uses ultrasonic cavitation and its own restoration process to work deep into the record groove, removing contaminants and residues that conventional cleaning can leave behind.

And here's where it gets interesting.

Kirmuss describes the KA-RC-1 as a record restoration system, rather than simply a record cleaner. The process is designed to help the stylus make better contact with the groove, potentially revealing more of the detail, space and dynamics contained in the recording.

So imagine taking that £5 charity shop record you've almost given up on...

Putting it through the KA-RC-1...

Then dropping the needle.

Suddenly the record you thought was “a bit noisy” sounds like a record you actually want to keep.

And that's where vinyl gets addictive.

You clean one record.

Then another.

Then you start looking at the pile you've been meaning to clean for the last five years.

Then you realise you've spent Saturday afternoon cleaning records instead of listening to them.

We've all been there.

The question is:

What's the dirtiest record in your collection that you'd love to hear properly again?

Tell us in the comments. Old Beatles pressing? Charity shop bargain? £1 flea market horror story?

We want to hear about it.
