By 2018ish I was the last Pin Ups/One More Tune DJ left standing (the other chaps had retired, nothing more sinister than that, they are still amongst my best pals in the universe). DJing solo and more regularly undoubtedly made me raise my game to another level, but I was also always aware all responsibilities lay with me. I recall DJing a wedding in late 2019 in absolute shreds (pretty sure I had covid) but the show had to go on.

I had tried to find replacement DJs but it's very hard to find someone with esoteric music knowledge and competent mixing skills, who looks presentable, who is always on time and always prepared, who has equipment and back-up equipment, who knows when to people please, who knows when to tactfully tell certain guests to GTF, who can talk on the mic, who will never ever play S*x on Fire, who will also never panic even after they spill a Diet Irn Bru over their (main) mixer during a first dance 😬 - I had/have 100+ 5 star reviews for this complicated mix of reasons.

In my absence from Scotland my friend Dave has taken my place to fulfil 2026 bookings. We were absolutely transparent with clients and I'm absolutely delighted by these rave reviews from weddings at The Biscuit Factory. I'd known Dave for decades but it was that connected man who reminded me that Dave still DJd. When I realised Dave still DJd I knew he was the person to replace me.

My sincere thanks also to , .haggis, , and who have been fountains of wisdom and support, referrals, and also very capable substitutes over the last few years. John D. x

Why read one book about Del Amitri when you can read two? I saw Russell Crowe tweeting/Xing last week about how much "Nothing Ever Happens" means to him and wanted to get in on sharing my appreciation of a big Glasgow music success story.

"The Tremolo Diaries: life on the road as well as other diseases", is the frontman's own account of touring the US and Europe (supporting Ba*****ed Ladies and Simple Minds, respectively) while dealing with early on-set Parkinson's. He often keeps himself to himself in daytime, exploring cafes and second hand shops. It's really honest. Where he thinks things are sh*te he says so. It's nice to see how many music biz folk he meets back up with who worked with him in the 90s when Del Amitri were on the way to scoring multiple US hot 100 hits. The book was a kind gift from big sister .dee.104 after we saw Del Amitri live a few years back.

I read "These are such perfect days: the Del Amitri story" by Charles Rawlings-Way back in 2022 and I should have posted about it earlier as it's a cut above the average rock bio. I assume the author got full and proper access to Justin and right hand man Ian Harvie as there's a terrific level of detail, from riding high with worldwide hit "Roll To Me", to a memorably unflinching look at how the band fizzled out in 2002.

I met Justin in 2010 when he DJd at Pin Ups Ladies Night 3 party as an extra bonus who we had billed on the poster as a "secret hunky treat". Back when Facebook Events were critical to a party's success we leaked a few days out that the hunk's initials were JC and did not discourage anyone from inferring Jarvis Cocker or Julian Casablancas. Either of those would have been delighted with the 1am reception Justin received as we brought him to the decks following a quick medley of his hits, and he proceeded to play punk 7 inches. This arose because a month before I had seen him in Nice n Sleazys, and asked him if I could touch his sideburns.  He could tell that I was a genuine fan as I bored him about many of his songs. (James Graham of The Twilight Sad and Al Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, to name just 2, have also endured this Sleazys slobbering.)

Omitted to review 's terrific retrospective last autumn. More musicians should take this route of artefacts and chat, rather than writing the one crap novel that lurked within them 😂 With an honorary mention for too. 5/5
