"Caverslee Cottage appeared to lean comfortably against its backdrop of larch trees, broken but tranquil. Maybe it had become reconciled to the land that was hugging it ever closer. I imagined birds and bats roosting in the eaves, voles and squirrels scurrying among the remaining floorboards, life digging itself in.

"Just below the crumbling chimney, what appeared to be a rowan sapling had grown up through the roof, its leaves flickering in the breeze. Caverslee Cottage was turning, with infinite slowness, into a small wood."

Catching up here on a lovely piece on 'Caverslee Burn, In the Footsteps of Joan Eardley (Almost)' by the poet, Chris Powici, on the Bella Caledonia website. Chris travels to Caverslee in the Scottish Borders, which Joan visited in the 1950s with her partner at the time, Audrey Walker.

Caverslee Burn, In the Footsteps of Joan Eardley (Almost). The walk began well. The path was dry, dusty and wide. Sheep and cattle grazed amiably in the fields, and a lone hare galloped away at my …

We are catching up on Joan Eardley birthday wishes...

Here, two kids from the Samson family stand in front of a wall, below artist Joan Eardley's studio on St James Road in Townhead, Glasgow. The artist was born in 1921.

This painting is one of a series, the children swapped sweets and biscuits for posing time (sweet wrappers even ended up stuck in the paint!)

Today marks 105 years since the birth of Joan Eardley.

Joan was born at Bailing Hill Farm, Warnham, West Sussex on Wednesday 18 May 1921.

These photographs from the Eardley family archive have never been seen before.

The first is a seaside scene and shows Joan on the left with her younger sister Pat on the right. Pat was born 16 months after Joan in November 1922.

Joan’s niece Anne Morrison-Hudson believes the photograph was taken around the mid-1930s in Cornwall. The family loved Cornwall.

The second family photograph shows Joan ages three days old being held by her nurse at Bailing Hill Farm.
