We deliver cultural workshops, produce exhibitions, create events and provide support to artists of Chinese descent. Ricefield Arts was founded in December 2004 by two Chinese women, Lin Chau and Julia Hung, their aim to promote and advance education of Chinese arts and culture in Scotland. Within its first year of operation Ricefield received the Empowerment Award (2005) for its contribution to arts and culture and last year (2013) won the Community Champion Award for arts and culture.

A big thank you to Tom for his generous book donation to the Ricefield Arts Library.

Thanks to his donation, our library now holds full editions of Journey to the West 西游记 and Water Margin 水浒传, alongside different versions of Romance of the Three Kingdoms 三国演义 and Dream of the Red Chamber 红楼梦 — together known as the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature.

These works are available in a range of formats, including modern Chinese, classical Chinese, English editions, and even illustrated lianhuanhua versions.

Whether you’re revisiting a familiar story, discovering these classics for the first time, or simply curious about Chinese literature, you’re very welcome to come and explore the collection.

In this painting workshop, we are going to create a 'still life' by taking some time out to stop, pause and reflect. ⭐

We will take the time to immerse ourselves in the painting of a Chinese-inspired vase with peonies in it.

In Chinese tradition, the peony, known as the "King of Flowers," embodies wealth, elegance, love, and high status, and is long associated with prosperity and good fortune. Painting these flowers will enable us to stop and appreciate their beauty and what they may offer us. Chinese vases carry symbolic meaning through their shape and motifs painted on them- this is where we will paint our own story. What represents you? What story would you like to tell, and how can it be painted? Are there shapes, animals, flowers, or objects that symbolise this?

Join Fiona in this 1-hour workshop to pause and reconnect with oneself, and enjoy some ''me time'' because we all deserve it. Plus, a bonus of a hand-painted piece of artwork!

Join us for a special online drawing workshop that brings together two artistic traditions in celebration of spring. ❀

In this session, participants will explore the Chinese orchid — one of the “Four Gentlemen” in Chinese culture, traditionally associated with nobility, humility and integrity — through the visual language of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Using tracing paper or vellum, we will create a delicate orchid design inspired by stained glass, combining soft colour washes with bold black structural lines.

This workshop offers a thoughtful cross-cultural approach to drawing and design, connecting Chinese artistic symbolism with Glasgow’s own Mackintosh heritage. ❤

How to care for your terrarium at home

All materials will be provided, including jars, plants and terrarium materials.

We had a lovely time today at our Chinese Knotting Workshop, sharing the beauty and meaning of this traditional craft together. 🧧

Chinese knotting is more than a decorative art form. With its intricate patterns and symbolic meanings, it carries wishes for good luck, connection and well-being, and reflects a long tradition of handmaking passed down through generations.

Thank you to our placement Yuetong who led the workshop, and to everyone who joined us and spent the afternoon learning, making and sharing with us. It was wonderful to see each knot take shape in different hands, each one with its own character.

We hope you enjoyed the workshop and took home not only your finished piece, but also a small connection to the cultural stories and skills behind it. 🫶🏻🫂

🧧 Jia Ma (甲马) Workshop – A Beautiful Afternoon of Printmaking ✨

Our Jia Ma woodblock printing workshop has come to a lovely close!

Participants explored this unique folk tradition from Yunnan, learning about its symbolism of protection, blessing, and good fortune. Each person created their own printed designs and transformed them into meaningful protective pendants (平安符) to take home.

Alongside this, everyone also printed a handmade greeting card, bringing together traditional imagery and personal expression in a simple yet beautiful way. 💌

It was such a joy to see these ancient symbols come to life through everyone’s hands — each piece slightly different, yet equally full of meaning.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and shared this creative afternoon. ✨
