โ€‹workshop
9 April, 15.30-17.00 | Studio 1 RCS

Chrisโ€™s workshops are all about the endlessly fascinating link between music and dance, focussing on practical work in the studio involving body-percussion, voice, movement and an opportunity to explore both the direct and indirect connections between the two art forms. Always with a sense of play, Chris will offer a dynamic session, encouraging participants to explore and share their own sense of musicianship. Questions on his previous dayโ€™s free class with Indepen-dance are welcome. Comfortable clothing is advised.

Using looping technology in the dance class environment can be liberating, opening up creative possibilities and enhancing the music for the dancers. There can also be challenges and pitfalls. In this skillshare Signy will demonstrate her approach to looping, using kalimba and drums, covering technical considerations, looking at how to create click tracks and presenting some simple scores.

Rhythm Theory
by
Steve Forman

il Corpo nel Suono
7-9 April, Glasgow

Rhythm Is Kinetic And Time Relevant. Rhythm Is Psychophysica. Rhythm comprises systems and structures. Steve Forman explains his Rhythm Theory narrative that has been expanded to teach classical musicians studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. This practical workshop invites us to think about our physical relationship with sound, meter and structure. A grammatical way of thinking through music as we would with any language. Thinking of rhythm systems as sentences in a paragraph, or lines of dialog. Using musical and language syntax Forman explores the qualities of coherence, momentum, inertia and intention.

For more than three decades Steve Forman made a significant imprint in American recording and film music, working directly with many established artists and film composers; his discography includes hundreds of pop record projects, underscoring sessions for motion pictures, television shows, commercials, interactive titles, and theatrical events.
In 2003, Forman began a career transition from the recording studios in Los Angeles to focus on the study of composition at the California Institute of the Arts, earning a BFA and an MFA in composition in four years. In September 2008 he joined the research department at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and was awarded a PhD in composition by St. Andrews University in 2011.
His research has led to an expanded understanding of multi-dimensional polyrhythmic systems and high resolution synchronicity, semi-malleable forms, and non-standard instrumentation. In 2009 the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland initiated a choice module, Pulse Relational Rhythm Theory, based on insights emerging from Formanโ€™s research, and more than three decades of professional practice.
โ€‹Currently that practice includes active participation in Glasgowโ€™s vibrant folk music sessions, compositions of new concert for works in a variety of genres, and lecturing at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
