Not all places to ponder are ponds, but all ponds are places to ponder.

Ponds etc. is a collection of new and older paintings taking reference from Glasgow’s Queens park and the surrounding tenement life.

Painted from sketches and memory, these works sit somewhere between the real and the imagined, exploring the quiet moments of wonder within the everyday.

Through sculptures, drawings and installations Canadian interdisciplinary artist, Tess Snaden, explores themes of home and body to reconstruct internalised value systems and centre play. After completing a BFA from Emily Carr University, in Vancouver, Canada, she has spent the last three years travelling around Europe and creating a home on the west coast of Scotland. Her passion and practice is an exploration into how we explain the inexplicable. Through abstract form and domestic handicraft, she explores the dualities of play and control.

" It was in the winter of 2024 that I spotted the front cover of a Sunday magazine. It featured a stunning photograph of Sinead O’Connor, the Irish singer. I loved it and decided to have a go at painting it myself. The first painting was in black and white like the photo. However then I decided it might look better in blue to represent the singer’s mood in the picture.

Over the course of six months I painted 20 women, all in different colours. Usually I tried to use the colours to represent the women in some way. I called these paintings Colourful Women for obvious reasons.

I would like to raise money for Glasgow Womens Aid through this exhibition - through the sale of art work and donation links at the exhibition. "

“I am a retired primary school teacher and amateur artist. Until recently I taught children and adult art classes but hadn’t developed my own art work. However last winter I started this project of Colourful Women.

Exhibition info:

‘This exhibition of paintings is based on a series of life drawings.

The drawings were done in charcoal on newsprint, some were very rapid sketches, many overprinted one on top of each other whilst trying to achieve a feeling of gesture and movement and energy. I tried to preserve those feelings in the paintings. The exhibition also includes these original drawings .

The impetus behind the work was to produce a piece which would hopefully be selected as a backdrop at my daughters wedding.’
