The beautiful work of Kerry Souter, Carol Nunan and Julie Smith is currently on display in EDGE OF THE KNOWN until the end of the week.

Full of detail, colour, and atmosphere, these are works that really need to be seen in person. The more time you spend with them, the more there is to discover.

Julie Smith’s paintings possess a raw, elemental quality that speaks not only of the Scottish landscape, but also of its ancient history. Through layers of paint, texture, and precious metal leaf, she captures something beyond the visible land itself, inviting us to imagine the landscape before it was inhabited and the first footprints pressed into its surface.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗲𝗯𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗲𝗿’𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 ‘𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹’ 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸, 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖𝐍.

This painting introduces a new direction in Connie’s practice, exploring the meeting point of land and water with a brighter, more surreal atmosphere. In ‘Over the Hill’, vivid colour captures the shifting relationship between the two, where each reflects, distorts and transforms the other, hovering between the familiar and the unknown.

Connie Liebschner’s work has a remarkable fluidity that echoes the water running throughout her paintings. Inspired by her love of wild swimming, reflections, shifting light and flowing forms move across the surface, creating landscapes that feel both powerful and serene💧
Her background in printmaking comes through in the way she builds each painting ~ layered surfaces, translucent passages of colour, and moments of clarity where clean, structured lines sit against raw, organic textures. This tension gives her landscapes their depth and rhythm, drawing the viewer into shifting perspectives of Scotland’s mountains and waterways.

⛰As the featured artist in 𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖𝐍, Connie has transformed our front gallery into a sweeping panoramic scene, bringing the atmosphere of Scotland’s wild places indoors.

There’s something so captivating about Carol Nunan’s work in 𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖𝐍. Blending abstraction, layered textures and shifting forms, her prints feel both ancient and dreamlike, with glimpses of wildlife emerging throughout.
Her use of earthy tones, luminous bursts of colour and intuitive mark-making combined reveal something new with every viewing!

We had a wonderful afternoon chatting to feature artist 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐞𝐛𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐞𝐫 about her work alongside fellow 𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖𝐍 artists, 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐞 𝐒𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐡 and 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐍𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐧, sharing insights into their work, processes and inspirations. While 𝐊𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫 couldn’t join us in person, her presence is deeply felt throughout the exhibition through her beautifully evocative work.

Carol Nunan is currently exhibiting work in 𝐄𝐃𝐆𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖𝐍 and we are delighted that she will be joining featured artist Connie Liebschner and Julie Smith at the gallery this Saturday, 30th May, to discuss her practice.

Carol is an innovative printmaker whose work draws inspiration from Neolithic and Christian archaeological sites. Her prints evoke shifting skies, weathered stone and the endurance of human presence within the land.
Born in Ireland, raised in Zambia and now based on Bute, her practice is shaped by a life lived across landscapes, bringing an intuitive and luminous approach to colour and texture.
