This election day, we’re sharing a couple of key figures from our survey of Scotland’s playwrights.

The first national survey of Scotland’s playwrights in five years shows that the average income from playwriting for our professional writers is £6001 per year. Whilst commissioning rates have increased, creative earnings have stagnated: 30% of professional writers who responded to the survey received no income from commissions in the last financial year.

Investment in artists and their livelihoods is vital for Scotland and its communities. We support calls for a consultation on a Basic Income for Artists to support artists to deliver the art Scotland’s people deserve.

We’ll be sharing a fuller analysis of the survey’s results next month.

May is here and with it, Play for May!

Play for May is a month‑long access event designed to help playwrights shake free from procrastination and leap into making something new.

It'll consist of:
-Four short pre‑recorded workshops led by playwright Davey Anderson, released every Monday on the Playwrights' Studio, Scotland website.
-Weekly Friday writing sprints, hosted online.
-A final event on Friday 29th May.

Each workshop includes a practical exercise: something to get you writing, making, experimenting and moving forward. The sessions will be available to view throughout May once uploaded. The emphasis is about getting work from your head onto the page - and by the end of the month, having the seeds of something new you can be proud of.

How to take part

1. Sign up online via this link: https://form.jotform.com/261165257120348

2. Watch the Monday workshops (starting Monday 4th May). A brand‑new pre‑recorded workshop from playwright Davey Anderson drops every Monday. Each session stays live for the whole month so you can revisit, pause and play as you go.

3. Join the Friday Writing Sprints online. These weekly sessions are all about taking time to get words on the page.

4. Come along to the final in‑person (or online) event on Friday 29th May. Celebrate the end of the month with a live gathering and connect with fellow playwrights.

That’s it! Hope to see you there.
