New Poster Pool interviewee is Aleksander Walijewski recent graduate from the University of Arts in Poznań. Go to our story to read the interview but stay here for a second to have a look at Aleksander’s poster for the 2019 film “Lighthouse”: “This is an alternative film poster I have recently made for The Lighthouse (directed by Robert Eggers). The film itself is so weird and surreal that it immediately inspired me to create a poster. I was working on it at nights. It was only right to work on it in darkness and silence.
My intention was to make it as mysterious as the film and not spoil too much, although once you watch it, I’m sure it becomes a bit clearer. It shows two main and only characters from the movie separated by fracture in shape of the lighthouse in the middle. A seagull at the top is the source of light that brightens characters’ eyes. The light also reflects in dark water at the bottom of the poster which seem to go deep in between the two men. Finally, as a reference to the storm, typography is intended to remind of heavy rain.”

Nicole’s case study presentation for Poster Pool: “‘Not a Self-Help Book’ is a how-to book on overcoming artist block through (somewhat painfully) honest, tried and tested means. I have always been quick to reject ‘self-help’ books, however starting this project I was in a slump I felt I couldn’t get out of and turned to creating a guide for art students, like myself, who felt the pressure of having to create when you aren’t feeling your most creative. I started this project in my second year at GSA, however I feel it may be more relevant now given the pressure to be creative/produce your best work while in lockdown and away from your usual creative space.”

This week our Poster Pool interviewee is Nicole Junkin
Nicole is a visual designer from Northern Ireland and student at the Glasgow School of Art. Here is her poster series and a few words from Nicole about it: “This is an artistic poster series created in a visual play workshop. I was given the words ‘here’ and ‘not here’ as a prompt before using cut and paste and photo manipulation to create a playful yet meaningful outcome. For me, this series is about consumption and the bliss of remaining ignorant.”

This week our Poster Pool interviewee is Paul Simpson graphic design student at Edinburgh College of Art. Here is his poster: “Flat Track is a poster that I designed towards the end of my first year at ECA. Created using found materials and collage, this poster is a good example of design elements that I favour within my work – heavy layout experimentation, paired with an understated colour scheme and a plethora of bold typography is generally the formula for my designs these days.” Interview with Paul in our story, later in story highlights! ✌️

We asked Joanna about her recent projects and she showed us her favourite one: Pozory’s band visual identity she created. Joanna says: “It’s a new Warsaw alternative band. Their logo had to be intriguing and kind of witty.”

We asked Joanna a few questions for Poster Pool, go to our story to see the answers. Also, swipe right to Joanna’s poster, here is her comment on it: “It's inspired by Tomek Makowiecki's song. I loved its vibe and text about six years ago but the whole album disappeared from streaming some time ago. Surprisingly it appeared in February and it made me so happy I decided to make three posters (here is one of them).”

Poster Pool : Palina and her visual identity for a coffeehouse project space ☕️🌿: “When I was about 15 years old I really wanted to open a coffee shop where you could also buy flowers. During my second year at the university, I got to create my first “big” project that took almost a whole semester. It was a visual identity for a brand of my choice. So it was a perfect opportunity to make my childhood dream come true. That’s how the Small Talk was created. The logo combines coffee bean and leaf to represent love for beautiful flowers and tasty coffee. Pastel colours and earthy, organic patterns continue to represent plant theme. Handwritten postcards with "in no way perfect" illustrations give a feeling that they were sent by a close friend. All together it should evoke a feeling of a coziness, a place where everyone is welcome.”

This week we interviewed Palina from Warsaw. See her poster here and go to our story to read the interview. Palina about her poster: “The subject of this one is Disinformation in Social Media. I think it’s a quite important topic nowadays taking into consideration how much time we spend on the Internet and how easy it is to get lost there.”

We asked Louise to share with us what she has working on lately and here is a project she showed us: “I worked on this project in January this year (I’m studying 3rd year BA Communication Design at GSA). It’s much more like the beginning of a long project rather than a finished one. It is about building an environment reflecting on the way we picture our bodies. My reflection is based on a collection of texts I wrote a few years ago: I’ve tried to envision the body as a place of memory, imagination/sensations and organic movements.

I researched different forms and shapes and tried to understand what would their relation be like and how someone could meet those elements in an environment. What about interaction? What about scale? What about making the viewer live my memories? The results here are 5 elements made in digital 3D and used to build that environment that is virtually accessible to the viewer. The texts are like a dialogue, guiding the viewer through that landscape.”

This week our interviewee is Louise - Glasgow School of Art student. Louise about her poster: “This poster is part of a project I worked on in October (2019) or so. The project was a visual exploration based on a single object: a tangerine. It’s aiming to display part of the visual outcomes to communicate the global universe I had built. « Earth is blue like an orange » is the title of this project, and was borrowed from Paul Eluard’s poem (La Terre est bleue comme une orange).” Interview with Louise can be found in our story today and later in story highlights. @ Glasgow, United Kingdom
