So here we have a Glen Garioch ( pronounced Glen Geery ) 8 year old 1st refill Bourbon cask. Glen Garioch is located in Oldmeldrum in rural Aberdeenshire and are renowned for their Single Cask Whiskies.
Colour
Pale Gold
Nose
Straight away fresh sawdust that gives a nose tingle with tinges of Lemon Citrus fruit that has the sweetness of vanilla interwoven through the aroma of the dram.
Palate
With this dram the first thing you notice on the palate is the texture of malt then immediately after in a strong way toasted almonds and freshly ground black pepper that contribute to this long warming glow and just to round it off at the end some juicy sultanas.
Finish
This is such a well balanced dram the finish is very long and Warming and the waxy nuttiness and pepper stay with you giving a warming glow from head to toe. If your passion is a Traditional no nonsense Cask
Strength dram the this honestly fantastic dram is for you.
With Water
Nose
The intensity of aroma has faded to allow the gentler aromas of vanilla cream and pineapple come through with a faint back note of nutmeg.
Palate
Once again it the creamy smooth texture that comes first, followed by to a lesser degree the ever present taste of freshly ground black pepper and rounded off by tinges of dried apricot.
Finish
Fresh ground black pepper again is ever present that contributes to the long warming finish that is supported by the tastes of dried apricot and sultanas.
I love this dram it takes me back to a simpler time in whisky making. THIS IS A TRUELY A FANTASTIC TRADITIONAL SCOTS WHISKY IN THE TRUE SENSE OF THE WORD it provides Quality, flavour and pure enjoyment this dram with some dark chocolate a rough milled oatcake and some Orkney mature cheddar tastes like heaven to me 9.5 out of 10
