World Spirit Theatre Group produces community theatre that explores integration & the asylum process from the perspective of those experiencing it directly, and celebrates the contributions of asylum seekers and refugees to Scottish communities. Many of the group’s members have come to Scotland from a diversity of communities and cultures globally, and have direct experience of ‘integration’ and a

ll that this implies. World Spirit works with the Forum Theatre or Theatre of the Oppressed method of Augusto Boal, a student of the critical pedagogue Paulo Freire, which seeks to directly involve the audience in achieving positive outcomes to the problems that the performers present. The group has been running for nearly two years, and in that time has produced three thought-provoking plays: The Roundabout and Roots, which explored the asylum process and integration respectively, and a new play and project being performed in schools in Scotland. This most recent play, Rami & Janet, is based loosely on the story of Romeo and Juliet and explores the way behaviours can entrench segregation or encourage multi-directional integration.

Unknown Lives - Nico

‘Restrictions that are put on asylum seekers, such as you are not allowed to work, you can’t have access to opening a bank account…. These might be small things for others, such as opening a bank account, however it is really important for asylum seekers, especially during lockdown.
If I am in the city centre, I have no friends to socialise with, I can use the bike to cycle- as it's also been recommended by the government for exercise and wellbeing.
Cycling focuses my mind.
Waiting, waiting, there is always a waiting list for everything. Access to bikes is limited. Everyone is at a capacity.’

Unknown Lives- Olivia

‘The psychological impact of covid-19 has affected asylum seekers and destitute migrants, as the winter dark nights have arrived, the mental health impact of trying to make ends meet, seems even more hopeless.
Humans and not case work. Locked up in hotels.
As long as there are barriers in our communities, pre school, high school, colleges, universities, places of work, political parties, the inequalities and injustices will not end. Asylum seekers are not free until they all have the right to work.’

‘it is one of the beautiful cities that give life another form. I love roses and adore roses even though I live alone, but I feel with roses something else than life and its taste’
