Community Renewal: Rom Romeha We are a team of mainly Roma people supporting other Roma community members in 📍Govanhill, Glasgow.

Community Renewal Trust have been working with the Roma Community in Govanhill for over a decade. Our ethos is the spend time really listening to all different parts of the local Roma community. We seek to build skills and expertise among Roma people to support other Roma – we employ seven Roma community workers and have dozens of Roma volunteers. Over the next few years we are testing a model of

transferring the work we do into a new Roma-led social enterprise called Rom Romeha CIC which is a Roma Community Development Trust. This is expected to be a phased change as the capacity of the staff and directors increases. Community Renewal Trust have previous taken a similar approach to supporting new Community Development Trusts to form and grow in Bellsmyre (in 2014) and Ardrossan (in 2018). Our existing work in Govanhill with Roma people includes:


Local Conversations community development programme funded by PHT including:
-Regular Community Forums
-Multicultural events such as Roma Burns Night
-Supporting International Roma Day
-Youth Groups
-The Sew Roma group
-Roma Men’s Group

We are also working with partners to seek development of a Roma ----Cultural Centre in Govanhill
Roma EU Citizens basic migration advice
Roma Employment Support
Universal Credit Support funded by Glasgow City Council

On Friday the 5th of June, Community Renewal Rom Romeha was delighted to host a successful event at the Ramshorn in partnership with Heriot-Watt University as part of the Roma PlaceAge project.

Practitioners from across different sectors joined Roma community co-researchers to hear powerful stories and gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of Roma people in mid to later life. Through storytelling and co-production, participants explored practical ways to improve health, wellbeing, and quality of life for Roma community members aged 40+.

The event focused on building on the strengths that exist within the Roma community and identifying solutions shaped by the people they are intended to support. Guided by the principle of "Nothing About Us Without Us," the discussions highlighted the importance of working alongside Roma communities to create meaningful and lasting change.

‼️ Rom Romeha is deeply concerned by the recent rise in racist incidents and hostility directed towards minority communities across the UK.

We feel that comments made by Kemi Badenoch, current leader of the Conservative Party in Westminster, perpetuate dangerous and harmful stereotypes about Roma, Gypsy, and Traveller communities.

As an organisation working alongside Roma families in Glasgow, we know the impact that prejudice, discrimination and hate can have on individuals, families and entire communities. Many Roma people have experienced racism throughout their lives and continue to face barriers to participation, employment, education and community life.

🤝 We believe that everyone has the right to live safely, free from fear, intimidation or discrimination, regardless of their ethnicity, nationality, language, religion or background.
