Opening Saturday 27 June at Inverness Creative Academy: Strata, hosted by Visual Arts Scotland ⛰️

'Strata' begins with landscape as material, surface and form. Working across painting, print, textile, photography and mixed media, the exhibition focuses on how landscape is held through surface and shaped through form. Layers accumulate, marks settle, materials shift. Whether working through depiction or material process, the artists consider landscape as something formed rather than fixed. Each work holds a relationship between what is seen and what is made.

Presented at Inverness Creative Academy, the exhibition is grounded in a context where land is not distant, but lived and worked. The works reflect this through their attention to material, structure and change.

This exhibition brings together wall-based works that operate across image, surface and structure. For some, landscape begins in observation and is translated through paint. For others, it emerges through process, where materials are layered, compressed or reworked over time.

Visit the exhibition Monday–Friday (9am–5pm) and Saturday (10am–3pm) until 31 August.

We are excited to introduce Common Room, a new talk series presented by Wasps Studios, created to bring together artists, designers and makers from across our community.

The pilot event in the series will take place on Thursday 16 July (5pm–7pm) at South Block in Glasgow and will be hosted by Mil Stricevic from Irregular Sleep Pattern. The discussion will feature fellow Wasps tenant, co-founder of GOOD Brand Consultants, Chris Lumsden alongside Mil, as the cohort muses the question ‘can space inform creative purpose?’ to talk about how their own working environments can influence their creativity and shape artistic processes.

Mil Stricevic is a design practitioner and academic, with over 15 years’ experience as a consultant working with individuals, organisations and brands to help them reach the right audience through great design thinking. He is co-founder of Irregular Sleep Pattern, an independent brand of bedding, sleepwear and associated products, designed at the intersection of art + utility in Glasgow, Scotland.

Common Room is hosted by the Wasps Studios network, which stewards 18 buildings across Scotland. It aims to encourage collaboration, debate and inspiration in an informal and welcoming setting.

Join us for an evening of conversation with artists, designers and makers as they discuss the relationship between creative space and creative purpose.

Over the coming months, we look forward to hosting more Common Room events with Wasps-based artists and creatives as speakers and panellists – we will be in touch to share details.

Apply now to Visual Arts Scotland's new open call to exhibit at 'Strata', an upcoming summer showcase at Inverness Creative Academy of work that explores landscape through layering, material and time.

The deadline for applications is Sunday 31 May.

The exhibition builds on VAS’ recent programme exploring contemporary relationships to landscape and is delivered in partnership with Wasps, whose Inverness Creative Academy provides a vital platform for artists working in the Highlands and beyond. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to supporting artists across Scotland and creating opportunities for engagement outside the Central Belt.

'Strata' brings this approach into focus: a locally situated exhibition with national reach, foregrounding material practice while opening new pathways for artists and audiences in the Highlands.

Celebrating our spaces: Inverness Creative Academy

Inverness Creative Academy is the Highlands’ first major creative hub. Originally the Inverness Royal Academy building (from 1895 until 1980), Wasps restored the location to provide working accommodation for artists and makers, creative industries, social enterprises and charities.

Previously a medical pracitioner and opthalmic surgeon, Ian is now a figurative artist with a studio at Inverness Creative Academy. He said of his time here:

'I’ve been an artist renting studio space since the building reopened, and in that time I’ve watched it grow into a vibrant, thriving creative community. It’s not only a hub for tenants, but a welcoming space for art students, workshop participants, and the wider public, offering access to exhibitions and working studios alike.

Working alongside such passionate and talented artists in a beautifully managed environment - with its airy, thoughtfully designed space - has been both inspiring and transformative. ICA has supported my development in meaningful ways, giving me the freedom to grow as an artist and the opportunity to exhibit my work in what is undoubtedly one of the finest exhibition spaces in the Highlands, if not all of Scotland.'

Thank you to Ian for sharing your perspective on working at Inverness Creative Academy.
