Pollok House Arts Society was founded by Sir John Maxwell Macdonald in 1959. His vision was to provide chamber music and a convivial supper for a group of music lovers in the elegant and intimate space of Pollok House. The programmes presented included singers, string quartets, piano trios, piano soloists, wind ensembles and the occasional theatrical performance.

Six or seven concerts were held a year operating initially on a membership basis, although the society’s concerts were also open to non-members. An option to stay on for a wonderful dinner in the Kitchen Restaurant with the performers was also offered.

Distinguished performers have included John Ogdon, Alfred Brendel, Pascal Rogé, Mitsuko Uchida, Jorge Bolet, Stephen Hough, Steven Osborne, Robert Irvine, Ian Watt, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Teresa Berganza, Margaret Price, Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Lucia Popp, Yvonne Kenny, Gérard Souzay, John Mark Ainsley, Benjamin Luxon, Christopher Maltman, Ann Murray, Jane Irwin, Marcus Farnsworth, Andrei Bondarenko, Beaux Arts Trio, Hermitage Trio, Amati String Quartet, Chilingirian String Quartet, Emperor String Quartet, Medici Quartet, Vienna Octet, Schubert Ensemble, Fournier Trio, and Arcadia Quartet, to name but a few.

At an EGM in October 2019, the society took the decision to dissolve after its final concert, originally due to be held on 31 May 2020, postponed to 06 June 2021, then cancelled, due to continuing coronavirus restrictions.
