.. a small contribution to BBC Radio 3's honouring one of the most influential conductors of our time, Sir Charles Mackerras, born on this day in 1925 ...
.. here is a fascinating documentary made for the 1967 premiere of Alexander Goehr's opera Arden Must Die / Arden Muss Sterben conducted by Mackerras.

This short film is packed full of insightful comments from Sandy, Erich Fried (librettist), Rolf Lieberman (Hamburg State Opera), ... and from c.10:00 fascinating comments from Mackerras on the technical challenges and rewards of tackling Goehr's score.

The whole film well worth a watch ... and especially for today in celebrating the richness of the musicianship of Sir Charles Mackerras.

November 7, 2025 7:30 pm | West Road Concert Hall

Organised by Cambridge University’s Faculty of Music and Centre for Music Performance, this concert celebrates the life and work of distinguished composer and former Professor of Music at the University of Cambridge Alexander Goehr (1932-2024).

Musicians from the University will join players from Britten Sinfonia under the direction and leadership of composer and conductor and long friend of Sandy’s, Sir George Benjamin.

Sandy left us with an unique catalogue of beautifully crafted and deeply wrought works that will stand the test of time … each work thought-provoking to the end, continually searching for an authentic musical expression.

The evening’s programme draws from some of his earliest works from the 60s with his Piano Trio Op.20 to Seven Laments, one of his very last works.

This promises to be a unique celebration of one of the most distinctive, distinguished, unique and endlessly evolving and rewarding voices of the past 70 years.

"So much to explore"

ALEXANDER GOEHR

Vision of the Soldier Er (String Quartet No 5)

Here are a few words from Tom Service on BBC Radio 3's New Music Show introducing Sandy Goehr's 5th String Quartet in a performance by the Villiers Quartet at the Royal Northern College of Music at 'Composing a Life' in 2023.

**********

"So many of Alexander Goehr’s pieces are dialogues with historical models or ideas but they're even more important dialogues with us his listeners ...
.. in this piece you know that sense of seeing the totality of the history of a life and its aftermath from so many directions that what you feel is happening all at the same time.
.. This music is something that only Alexander Goehr could achieve and achieve with the subversive dazzle ...
.. So much to explore in the legacy not only of chamber music but of operas, orchestral music in the whole catalogue."

Tom Service, BBC Radio 3

**********

The 5th quartet (of 6 spanning 70 years), was commissioned by the Swaledale Festival for the Villiers Quartet.

Alexander Goehr
1932-2024

The Master Said
for speaker and chamber orchestra, op. 99 (2016)
Texts from the Confucian Analects

The last large scale orchestral work from Alexander Goehr, appropriately titled "The Master Said".

Around a sequence of sayings from the Confucian Analects is composed a set of elaborations on different aspects of an idea. The inspiration is partly Joseph Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross, similarly seven adagios for chamber orchestra, followed by a brief allegro.
