Operation Bogeyman
Simon Aepelli / 2025 / Ireland /67m.

This essay film navigates the intersections of folklore, folk horror and black propaganda during the Troubles.
Beginning in the filmmaker’s childhood home of Carrickfergus, Simon Aeppli embarks on a personal journey through haunting landscapes and archival discoveries to reveal a past steeped in strangeness and horror

The film examines a bizarre propaganda operation in which the British army staged fake black magic rituals to smear the IRA as ‘Satanists’. This unique blend of video essay and desktop documentary explores the spectres of Northern Ireland’s history through landscape and archival footage, audio interviews, and personal reflections. The film grapples with themes of buried histories, social control, and the haunting legacy of psyops and black propaganda.

The Director Simon Aepelli will attend the screening.

Carmela and the Walkers.
Luis Herrera - Esteban Coloma / Ecuador/ 2025 / 92 minutes.

As the world appears increasingly intolerant of ‘outsiders’, an Ecuadorian woman welcoming Venezuelan migrants into her home is a moving reminder of our capacity for warmth and humanity.
In an Ecuadorian border town, Carmela, a fearless Afro-Ecuadorian, offers food and shelter to Venezuelan migrants arriving on foot. Her home is a hub for a constant flow of people she supports through cross-border trades with Colombia – frequently by unconventional means.
When events unexpectedly impact her, Carmen’s resilience is tested, but her bravery in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, combined with an unwillingness to let those in need down, are a testament to her strength and goodness.
Strikingly captured in black and white, Esteban Coloma and Luis Herrera’s film captures a world defined by hardship and hope. It’s a vivid, unforgettable portrait of solidarity in a world where the line between right and wrong is not always clear.

At the Ecuador-Colombia border, a Afro-Ecuadorian woman runs an informal shelter for Venezuelan migrants, sustaining her mission through unorthodox cross-border trades. When crisis strikes, her determination to help others never wavers.

MEMORIAL/ LIQUIDATION.
Vasily Bogatov - Taisiya Krugovykh / France/ 2025/ 60m.

The film opens with archive footage of the “Returning the Names” ceremony, held annually by Memorial at the Solovetsky Stone, across from the former KGB headquarters. People read aloud the names of their relatives who were executed during the Great Terror. Among the participants, we also see opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
The narrative then follows the events surrounding the dissolution of the human rights organization in Russia’s Supreme Court. Supporters who gather at the courthouse in solidarity with Memorial are detained by the police and imprisoned.
The film captures the secret evacuation of Memorial’s archives—which contain information on Stalinist repressions, dissidents, and Soviet-era executioners—as well as the farewell to the organization’s office, which was seized by court order.
The start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine is shown through the eyes of the film’s protagonists—members of Memorial. During a Memorial press conference on the first day of the war, lawyer Ilya Novikov appears via video link from Kyiv as the city is being bombed by Russian forces.Oleg Orlov heads to Red Square with an anti-war and anti-fascist placard.
He and another Memorial staff member Irina Galkova are arrested by police. In the following scene, police raid Memorial’s office. Special forces in black uniforms and masks block all entrances, preventing anyone from entering or leaving. Memorial staff attempt to speak with the masked officers. Finally, deep into the night, the security forces leave, taking all computers with them. The Memorial team manages to re-enter the office to find it ransacked and the walls defaced with the letter "Z".
Memorial is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
After the ceremony, Oleg Orlov takes the stage and calls for unwavering support for Ukraine.
After receiving the Nobel Peace Prize Oleg Orlov is put on trial for “discrediting the Russian armed forces.”
During the proceedings, he learns of Alexei Navalny’s death in prison. Despite an obvious threat to his freedom—and his life—Orlov continues to stand firm in his beliefs. He appears for his sentencing, and the court sends him to prison.

The film tells the story of the liquidation of Memorial, Russia’s o...

Song of All Ends.
Giovanni C. Lorusso /France /Italy/ Lebanon/ 2024/ 73m.

Song of All Ends gently leads us into the daily life of a family living in the Shatila Palestinian refugee camp in Beirut, sixteen months after the dreadful port explosion.
With slow determination the atmosphere builds through intriguing, as-yet unconnected, images in stark black-and-white, the face of a young girl, a teddy bear, rags flapping in the breeze, roofs strewn with rubble and tarpaulins.
Water streams everywhere and skeletal buildings are set against a grey sky littered with clouds.
There is mystery here, and a sense of great sadness. Life seems suspended; small, objectively productive tasks – calisthenic exercises, lugging tyres, feeding a small flock of chickens – seem pointless, merely to fill time. All at once, in a brief flash of colour, we come to understand the heart-rending tragedy that has paralysed this family and we begin to share with them the burden of sorrow that blurs the path forward.

gclorusso_dp

The film follows the life of a family of 6 in the Shatila camp, a series of days made of nothingness and boredom. Slowly, through hardship and dreams, we discover a family grieving the loss of their youngest daughter, little Houda, passed away during the 2020 Beirut port explosion. This will lead th...

The Eclipse
Natasa Urban / 2022 / 110 min / Serbian/ Romanian.

On August 11, 1999, while the world celebrated, most of Serbia’s population barricaded themselves in their homes and nuclear bunkers, in fear of the lunar shadow.
Using this event as a metaphor for nation’s unclean conscience about the consequences of its political choices, in this essay documentary I confront my country’s wartime and criminal past, and the evil that is still on the loose today.

The Director Natasa Urban will attend the screening.

Notes On An Exile
Gustavo Castro / 2025 / Brasil / 80m.

NOTES ON AN EXILE began in 2018, when Director Gustavo Castro recorded an encounter with a Brazilian-Palestinian family in the West Bank. What was meant to be a film about the possibilities of coexistence in an occupied land turns into a reflection on colonisation, apartheid, genocide, and the recent proliferation of war imagery.

In the wake of the events of October 2023, filmmaker Gustavo Castro revisits footage he shot in the West Bank in 2018, using it as a gateway into the ongoing tragedy of a people ensnared in a historical cycle of destruction and displacement.

Inside Gaza
Helene Lam Tong / 2025 / 72m.

Since the Hamas attack on 7 October 2023 and the Israeli reprisals that followed, international journalists and media have no access to the Gaza Strip. Agence France-Presse journalists, who were permanently stationed in Gaza, were among the last independent witnesses to the abuses committed in the hellscape that Gaza has become. Featuring previously unseen footage and testimony from reporters Mai Yaghi and Adel Zaanoun, as well as photojournalists Mahmud Hams and Mohammed Abed, Inside Gaza delivers a powerful account of conditions on the ground, underscoring the vital importance of a free and independent press.

If I Die Today.
Camilla Arlien / Denmark / 2025 / 98 min

Seven years in the life of a troubled young man. From his time in prison for attempted murder, to his time as a hopeful parolee, to his fatal decision.
When director Camilla Arlien begins filming Jannik, he is a young man serving a five-year sentence for attempted murder. An Eminem poster hangs in his cell and Jannik gets through his stay by writing down his thoughts and rapping them out. Shortly afterwards, he is released and has to find a foothold. He has a girlfriend, gets a cat, plays the piano, stays clean, goes to school and travels around telling young people about his former life that put him behind bars. Jannik is hopeful, he wants to make up for his past and live a normal life. But it is not easy to be re-socialised when you carry a fragile psyche and live in a society that doesn’t like a criminal record. With each battle he has to fight, the fuse burns shorter and the inner darkness grows deeper for Jannik, who says he has always been more afraid to live than to die. A touching and honest film about not feeling like you belong.

The Director Camilla Arlien and Producer Marie Schmidt Oleson will attend the screening.
