Counterflows

Counterflows Glasgow-based festival dedicated to unusual underground music from the UK and beyond.

05/09/2026

This evening at 8pm we are very pleased to be teaming up with our friends at Counterflows and GLOSS (Glasgow Library of Synthesized Sound) to broadcast a one-off duo show from Seijiro Murayama and Jean-Luc Guionnet.

Both artists have a long history in Glasgow dating back to the days of the INSTAL festival and are known for their rigorous, physical and philosophical approaches to music and sound. You can expect performances that will tease and challenge the fringes of experimental and improvised music.

Jean-Luc and Seijiro will present two sets: one on saxophone, percussion and voice, and another utilising GLOSS’s synthesizers - following a short residency in the space here at Florence Street this week.

Tickets for the performance have sold out – but fear not! - you can tune in and listen via our broadcast. We’ll be transmitting the whole event between 8pm and 10pm tonight.

This Saturday we're teaming up with Radiophrenia Glasgow to welcome the amazing duo of Seijiro Murayama and Jean-Luc Guionnet to GLOSS (5 Florence St, Glasgow). They'll be performing two sets; one on percussion and sax, and another utilising GLOSS' stock of synthesizers

There's just 10 tickets left. https://counterflows.com/event/seijiro-murayama-and-jean-luc-guionnet/

If you can't make it you can tune in to Radiophrenia's live broadcast, kicking off at 8pm on their website.

We all know "experimental music" is something of a ubiquitous term these days. If it does still mean anything, Seijiro and Jean-Luc belong to what we call "the hardcore contingent" of uncompromising sound makers alive today. For over 20 years now they've been working together, sculpting a particular hard, tense and taut sound with percussion, voice, saxophone and sometimes organ. While what they can be described as "improvisation", their approach involves intense attention to space and place, to the energy of the audience, and to the quality and perception of silence on various levels. This will be their first show here together in over a decade, following a long relationship with Glasgow dating back to the days of INSTAL. Join us!

More information:

A Sound Map of the River Clyde is a new community-focussed music project. Running throughout 2026–27, the project will culminate in a new composition tracing the entire River Clyde—from its source in the Southern Uplands, South Lanarkshire to its mouth at the Firth of Clyde.

Working with individuals, groups and communities who live, work and have a close relationship with the River Clyde, the project will create an aural portrait of the river through field recordings gathered along its length. The resulting work will be presented as a sound installation at Counterflows Music Festival 2027 (1–4 April).

We're pleased to be working with Clyde River Foundation, Creative Recovery Inverclyde, Dundee Radio Club, GalGael Trust, Music Space and Sound Thought on the project. We are also working in partnership with GLOSS (Glasgow Library of Synthesised Sound) to have two field recording kits available to borrow between July and November, giving participants the opportunity to make their own recordings of the River Clyde.

**How to get involved**
Further information on how to get involved, including how to submit your own field recording, borrow one of the field recording kits from GLOSS, or take part in one of our workshop sessions, can be found on our website.

A heart-felt THANK YOU to everyone who came and made the space with us at this years' Counterflows Festival 💞

This was our first year ever where we had the funding and resources to deliver the festival as full-timers. It took us 14 years to get here, and we're proud to have the best team, staff and volunteers, the most respectful, engaged and enthusiastic audience, and a selection of artists we think are making some of the most vital work in the world right now. We are feeling emotional, humbled, and completely energised.

While we reflect upon the festival, here are some snaps courtesy of Brian Hartley.

In the coming weeks we'll be sharing more photos and memories, as well as feedback forms for audience members.

In the meantime do share with us your memories. We look forward to seeing you next year!
