We are excited to be holding a round table discussion during the exhibition ‘Bet Low: An Island on your Doorstep’ opens at The Glasgow School of Art from 11 January - 8 February.

The exhibition is in celebration of the centenary of the birth of Bet Low which will be marked in Glasgow at GSA and in Orkney at the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness.

Al Gow’s wonderful prints and objects in the LOWLANDS exhibition. Each artist has written a short paragraph for the exhibition info. This is Al’s -
‘The artworks made for LOWLANDS came from exploring an idea that everything man-made
has come from the work of those who have come before us. This history may not be
immediately visible in an object or picture but always exists as a potential. The images that
became the subject of my prints came from photographs taken of a Unity Theatre production
of Men Should Weep in 1947. Bet Low was the set designer and painter. I was both drawn to
her direct connection to these images and also for the considered story telling potential of
anything placed on a theatre set.
I want to thank the University of Glasgow Archives & Special Collections, National Theatre of
Scotland, Sarah Wilson for research help and Robin Leishman for technical support.’ LOWLANDS   11th – 27th June 2021
