Milly Thompson’s work poses the question: What is considered high art? 🎨

Inspired by Japanese woodcuts and the idea of perfection, which is prominent in the art of Bonsai tree-sculpting, artist Milly Thompson utilised almost garish, bright colours and emojis in direct contrast to the presentation of Bonsai trees as constrained and forced into certain shapes, symbolising the way women’s bodies are subjected to a single viewpoint of perfection.

Milly Thompson: My Body Temperature is Feeling Good is free entry, open Wed-Sun | 10:00-18:00

Emilija Škarnulytė’s film Hypoxia (2023) draws inspiration from the Baltic Sea to reflect on extinction, deep-sea mining, and the unseen structures that shape our world.

The film merges science, myth, and science fiction to reveal how human actions have created vast underwater ‘dead zones’ where oxygen levels are so depleted marine life can no longer exist.

Inspired by the force of luxury consumer culture on women, particularly during middle age, Milly Thompson's Desert Siren shows a selection of sculptures draped in fabric to represent the impossible bodies. Representing the unrealistic aspirations and unattainable beauty standards pushed onto women by glamourous, designer adverts.
