It is with a heavy heart that we let you know we were very sad to hear the news that John Hudson passed away this morning.

John has been a big part of our junior section over the past few years. Most recently taking our first whole cast musical rehearsal for Beauty and the Beast.

His musical talent and rapport with our junior section will be hugely missed. Our thoughts go out to Elissa, John George, Harry, William and Maureen and John’s wider family at this sad time.

Gateshead is currently lacking a purpose-built theatre that local societies, charities, schools and community groups can hire to stage their productions.

Since the Dryden Centre became unavailable, many local musical theatre groups have been forced to seek venues outside the borough. For example, Gateshead Musical Theatre Company now hires facilities at Park View School in Chester-le-Street due to the shortage of suitable performance spaces within the area.

At the same time, the old Town Hall and surrounding area in Gateshead is being regenerated by Capital & Centric, who are inviting residents to share creative ideas that align with their vision for the development.

One suggestion is the creation of a new theatre venue that could be hired by local societies, schools and community groups, while also being capable of hosting professional touring productions.

A flexible, modern performance space would support the thriving amateur theatre community and complement the cultural facilities already established by the neighbouring Glasshouse.
