Well done Charlie. This is what it is all about. The Young Art Open competition inspiring creatives in all mediums - even plastic bottle tops.

Young Art Open 2019 winner Charlie "The first time I entered the Young Open competition at The Black Swan arts I was 13 years old. I was ecstatic to be told that my photography work was going to be in the exhibition. I had just fallen in love with Photography and Art so being very new to it all, it was so unexpected. I felt so proud to see my work on display and it gave me the confidence to keep working especially as I don’t have a naturally artistic talent, I have to really work at it.

For my next years entry I decided to be very brave and enter my art work the area I’m not as confident in. I might not have really strong drawing skills but I am very creative so I combined two things that are very important to me and wanted to get a message across through my art. For my pieces I made an octopus out of plastic bottle tops to represent the plastic being discarded in our oceans. I then took the famous Great wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai and made it out of plastic and rubbish again depicting the plight of our oceans.

I was so excited to hear that these two pieces had not only been chosen to be displayed but that I was a 12-15 age category winner! I went along to the preview exhibition with my family to except my award. It was a brilliant event and I was just blown away by the level of talent in the pieces of work displayed. I think the Young Open competition is a brilliant event giving us young people a chance to show what we can do. For my prize I got to go on a one-to-one sculpture workshop with a local artist Toby Holmes. We had a brilliant day using our creative ideas to make a piece. Getting to work with Toby and have him share his knowledge with me has inspired me to work more with sculptures.

I am still relatively new to art and photography having only got into it three years ago so I’m learning new things every day and enjoying all these amazing opportunities. Thank you Black Swan Arts for giving me this opportunity I’m looking forward to seeing this years entries at the exhibition."

Introducing the Black Swan Guild

The Black Swan Guild has been established as part of the Black Swan Arts’ commitment to nurture and showcase high-quality work from the widest possible range of artists and craftspeople. And also to celebrate the rich history of Arts and Crafts and the Black Swan Arts Building itself through our heritage.

The founding members have now been selected and they feature artists working with paint, textiles, clay, wood, metal, and stones. They will be exhibiting their work 4 times a year in the Round Tower at the Black Swan Arts Centre.
