DOWN TO THE WIRE!
Ladies and Gents, Friends and Followers..
Yesterday, the Scott Sutherland Project Team visited the studio of Alan Beattie-Herriot (centre of phot), where we had the privilege of sighting the full size model of the Leaping Salmon statue. The statue is now ready to go to the foundry for casting in bronze - no small task and no small cost!
Alan has cleverly designed the model to ensure the easiest and therefore the most cost effective manner of casting and has assisted in ensuring the outstanding costs to the project are minimised.

We would like to have the formal unveiling of the statue at Achnacarry in Spring 2025 when it will be dedicated to all those Officers and Men that were killed or seriously wounded during Commando Training.

We are down to the wire now... the Commando Memorial Heritage Scott Sutherland - Commando Memorial Heritage Trail - Project near completion and we now need just the remaining costs of the bronze statue casting to complete the entire project!

The Leaping Salmon - the lost Sutherland statue that will be dedicated to the Officers and Men whom were killed or seriously injured during WW2 Commando Training in Scotland.
This will stand in front of the Clan Cameron Museum, close to the entrance of the original Commando Basic Training Centre at Achnacarry.

The project has received many generous donation and assistance from a wide spectrum of supporters. We are most grateful for the endorsement of this project and recent grant of £10,000 from the RMA - The Royal Marines Charity which will assist in the production of this memorial.

By way of setting the scene: Scott Sutherland was the Scottish sculptor who won the competition to provide a suitable post-WW2 monument in remembrance of those Commandos who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the conflict. The result of Sutherland's labours is the now internationally renowned and iconic Commando Memorial - 'The Three Men on the Hill' above Spean Bridge and overlooking the Commandos original training area of Lochaber in the Highlands.

In order to ensure Scott Sutherland's life and works are not forgotten, this project was created by former Royal Marines and Army Commandos. The 2 Phase project first sought to establish the 'Commando Memorial Heritage Trail' comprising of toto 10 brass plaques at significant locations relating to Sutherlands life and work. Thanks to the generosity of so many individuals, businesses, various commando groups and associations, 6 of the plaques are now in place, with two more to be unveiled in the coming months.

Phase 2 of the project was to replace one of Sutherland's statues that was previously lost. The 'Leaping Salmon' statue will be recreated by one of Sutherland's own students; Alan Beattie-Herriot - a renowned sculptor in his own right. The statue will stand on a stone plinth similar to that of the original Commando Memorial and placed close to the entrance of the original Basic Commando Training Centre at Achnacarry.

The Leaping Salmon statue will be dedicated to the Officers and Men who were killed or seriously injured during Commando Training.

Again, due to the generosity of so many, we are now able to carry out the groundworks and construct the plinth for the memorial statue at Achnacarry.
