Southampton, 1940. Twelve-year-old Norman is cheeky, quick-witted and fiercely loyal. When war turns his world upside down and he is evacuated from home, Norman and his friends find themselves facing far more than they bargained for. Norman Harper is 91 years old. Not that he considers that any reason to start behaving himself.

In 1940, twelve-year-old Norman is growing up in wartime Southampton when evacuation sends him away from home and into a world of bullies, rules and grown-ups who expect to be obeyed. Norman has other ideas.

Quick-witted, fiercely loyal and blessed with a talent for getting himself into trouble, Norman discovers that sometimes doing the right thing means standing up to the people who insist they know best.

Eighty years later, Britain is facing another extraordinary moment in history - and Norman is still stubborn, still questioning the rules and still driving his family to distraction.

Moving between 1940 and 2020, Norman the Conqueror is a warm, mischievous and ultimately moving story of friendship, defiance, love and growing old - and of the child inside us who never quite grows up.
