Time: 10am - 11.30am

Location start: Jock's Pitch, East Cliff, Wear Bay Road, Folkestone, CT19 6PR

Join Elly Rutherford for a sensory movement journey around East Cliff park and Sunny Sands using playful movement, sensory materials and guided meditation. Together, we’ll also explore last year's Triennial artwork Oceans Tree of Life by Jennifer Tee and the surrounding nature.

What would it feel like to be an artwork or a plant? How can we become an extension of it using our body and tactile materials?

We Are Improv Dancers

workshop

"Dance dance dance. We meet like ocean waves, we share our rhythm, our gifts, we rise together, we crash together. We hum, we spin, we breathe. And suddenly we are creators of a dance"

This is a call to come and explore how to create a non-choreographic, collective dance. Together we will explore the tools used in movement improvisation: the body's natural movement range and rhythms, solo and as a group. Through movement games, music, witnessing and automatic writing, we will open new creative pathways and translate them from a dancer's perspective. We may step outdoors to gather inspiration from our environment bringing those impressions back into the dance.

Along the way, we'll learn from our own movement, witness others, and discover what becomes possible when individual creativity meets collective imagination. The workshop will culminate in the creation of an improvised group piece, shared within a supportive, and non-performative environment.

MOVEMENT AS DIALOGUE
Today at Kollectiv, dance researchers Emma Meehan and Sidonie Carey-Green led a fascinating discussion around Dialogue in Amerta Movement, a new book by Emma Meehan and Indonesian scholar Samsul Maarif.
Gathered in a circle surrounded by objects, materials and candles, participants explored ideas of ritual, improvisation, connection, spirituality and the ways we engage with one another through movement.
What emerged was a rich and thought-provoking conversation that only just scratched the surface, revealing the depth of knowledge, research and lived experience that informs contemporary movement practice.
A reminder that dance is not only something we watch or perform — it can also be a powerful way of thinking, questioning and understanding the world around us.
