We couldn’t be happier to announce... The Unthanks are coming back to Kent!🙌

As part of ‘The Sorrows Away’ tour we are presenting these folk sensations The Unthanks to Creative Folkestone Quarterhouse on June 22nd 2022🎉

‘The Unthanks return to live touring after two years off the road, showcasing forthcoming new album, Sorrows Away, their first non-project based record since 2015 BBC Folk Album Of The Year, Mount The Air💖. The intervening seven years of projects has been colourful,🌈 using the traditional music of the North East of England as a starting point the Unthanks received a Mercury Music Prize nomination, wrote six scarecrow soundtracks for Mackenzie Crook’s beautiful adaptation of Worzel Gummidge, and interpreted the work of female writers including Emily Bronte, Molly Drake and Maxine Peake🙏

‘On the upcoming tour The Unthanks will play songs from across this repertoire, in addition to tracks from new album, Sorrows Away, with a 5-piece line-up, in their aim to prove Folk music’s beauty and truth present in the oral history of the people, is anything but the commonly and affectionately defined, low culture.🍃 Their approach to storytelling makes easy bedfellows of tradition and adventure, direct social commentary and sophisticated harmony, heart-breaking empathy and glacial minimalism, earning them an army of writer and performer admirers including Martin Freeman, Elvis Costello, Dawn French, Colin Firth, Martin Hayes and members of Portishead and Radiohead🎻’

✨ “The Unthanks are capable of such beauty that sometimes I can hardly bear to listen to them.” Martin Freeman

✨ “There are few times when you discover a band and they stalk immediately to the heart of everything you love and hold dear.” Maxine Peake

Doc Club returns to Quarterhouse this month with Gunda by Viktor Kossakovsky 🎥🍿

After over a year of dodgy Zoom calls and bad internet connections we are pleased to finally announce the return of Doc Club to Folkestone Quarterhouse! Join us on Wednesday 30 June, 7.30pm for Gunda by Viktor Kossakovsky. The film will be followed by a live discussion.

Book a ticket by visiting out website: https://www.creativefolkestone.org.uk/whats-on/doc-club-gunda/

Viktor Kossakovsky reminds us that we share our planet with billions of other animals. Through encounters with a mother sow (the eponymous Gunda), two ingenious cows, and a scene-stealing, one-legged chicken, Kossakovsky movingly recalibrates our moral universe, reminding us of the inherent value of life and the mystery of all animal consciousness, including our own.

"This astonishing documentary offers an intimate look at the lives of a sow, her rambunctious piglets, a one-legged chicken and a herd of cows" - Manohla Dargis, New York Times
